thanks for all that feedback; good point re the automatch incorporation in the start function. Yeah, the history thing is looking ... onerous. Given that the whole point is to avoid repetition, I'm wondering if the randomisation I put in to avoid that might be good enough to eliminate the issue. I've been a bit busy on other things myself, so haven't got around to addressing some shortfalls in functionality; like the autopair needs to also be able to generate teams of different types i.e. either...

no results needed, so your second paragraph is right; re the history, it's because each round is a new event, as people arrive and leave, and if the courts are full, waitlisted people are accounted for, and we do try to avoid making the same pairings twice. maybe we don't need to build a history, just somehow interrogate the previous events? At my tennis club we have a need for software to make up pairs of players for doubles (based on their grade) and then make up matches for those teams. Normally we play for a set time, results are not kept ; this is called "board play". However we also have more competitive tournaments where we either make the pairs up or the players pair themselves up, and play a triple elimination tournament. Tournament Maker is the best fit i have found for Open Source software ,so I have forked a version to Github...
