Large file deletion fails in exciting ways

Actually, being based on a source package shouldn't be a total dealbreaker, as long as the original source packaging doesn't do anything squirrelly. What you do is find the commit that's equivalent to the source package, tag that as the starting point (if it isn't already) and make a set of patches from all of the other project's commits (using git-format-patch or something like it). Then you should be able to apply those patches on top of a new branch rooted at the starting point, and from there...
