I was also thinking the problem was in some variant of the gtk2 theme and/or in Mint, so I think it is good to leave the theme issue as is. To clarify on the other parts: setStyle() is a static method (as is style()) so it's not necessary to call those on the object itself. I think the docs even said it's best to setStyle() before constructing the application but that segfaulted for me on some themes so I did it after. Anyway, what I really meant was to just override the stylesheet for the controls...

Stylesheets can be applied to every component in the UI designer separately, it's a property, and it is also possible to combine the above stylesheets into one and apply it on the form rather than every component individually. Keep in mind that this always overrides the normal stylesheet from the OS or chosen theme, and your gray borders won't do anything on a gray style. The control highlights are likely caused by the widget set yes, though I think that it's going to be Qt regardless of your window manager, since it's, well, Qt-based :). The applied Qt style (KDE setting, config option in other WMs or just some default) could affect it though, yes. Unfortunately I don't use Linux for GUI work much so my ready knowledge there is a bit rusty. A quick test on my Kubuntu 20.04...
