You need to specify a Quit Password in SEB, only then it runs in the secure single app mode. This is documented in the manual (see "Quit Password" in this section) and in the in-app settings interface on the first page: "Quit Password: Set to run in secure mode". In Moodle 3.9+ if you select manual configuration, you can also set the Quit Password easily.

No, definitely not. Many parts of SEB are very closely interacting with the operating system. Therefore it would be counter productive to use a non-native platform technology/frameworks/languages. SEB 3.0 for macOS and iOS will use the improved WebKit browser engine (WKWebView), which provides improved web API compatibility. Integrating a Chromium-based browser engine would require a lot of development resources, which we don't have. In addition, iOS/iPadOS apps cannot use another browser engine....

Hi Rurik, SEB shows this lock screen when a process running on the Mac tries to display something in the foreground of the screen (over the SEB windows) and SEB cannot terminate that process (because that process may be running with administrator rights). The path and filename of the process binary are very unusual. An internet search for that filename finds that it is malware. Well, it is some SSL error, we cannot find out the cause, you have to do that yourself. Click the lock symbol when you open the same (exam) https URL in a regular web browser. It will show you details about the certificate used for that secure server address. There might be a hint what is wrong with the SSL certificate. But if you don't understand that certificate information yourself, you would need to ask the people running that web server. You are using SEB 2.4.1 (why did you not mention which...

This is likely anti-malware software, which scans https network traffic and breaks the encryption. Disable such Internet scanning or the anti-malware software completely during the exam. Or the web server of your exam provider is not configured properly. In case of SEB 2.4.1, there are wrong web server certificate configurations which don't work with the built-in Firefox XULRunner browser. SEB 3.1.1 shouldn't have that problem.

What does the proxy change in the URL, which part of the URL is missing, the host name or a part of it? We could add a new setting in the SEB clients, where the missing part of the full URL could be indicated. SEB clients would then prefix the URL which is used to validate the Config Key with this URL part from the new setting.

If those students used SEB 2.3 and you didn't change the setting Preferences / Security / "Use Assessment Mode (AAC) if available" to disabled (settings key enableAAC = false), then the new macOS Assessment Mode could theoretically have caused such issues, but it is only available from macOS Catalina 10.15.4 (and not on High Sierra, which is a very old macOS version btw.). If you're still using SEB 2.3, either update to 2.3.2 or disable that setting. Another possible reason might be if those Macs...

The full URL of the http request (so the page URL or resource URL has to be used). Currently there is no way to avoid this check. The original Config Key or Browser Exam Key hashes cannot be transmitted as is, otherwise it would be easy to intercept them and use a browser extension to pretend that a correctly configured unmodified SEB is used. Hashing it with the URL hides the real value of the key hashes. We will work on a new way of transmitting/querying the key hashes now (using a Javascript API)....

Apparently there is a custom SEB version which supports detecting HDMI connections. Try to convice those developers to contribute the code to the Safe Exam Browser open source project. Open source works only if people contribute. It's unfair that we provide the SEB code and applications for free and others profit from that, but don't contribute anything back!

I guess crash logs in Settings > Privacy > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data are only generated on devices activated for development in Xcode. Unless you haven't had "Share iPad Analytics & Share With App Developers" activated, which might be the other reason (but it wasn't the sole reason in a case in the other thread).

Btw. the Initiate Sending Logs feature in the beta version still has a flaw, it doesn't send the logs after starting SEB freshly, but if you start it, go back to the home screen and return to SEB, it should work.

I still hope the newer web browser engine will solve the crashes. If I can't reproduce the issue, I can't fix it. It must be connected to MDM enrolled devices or maybe even that VMWare AirWatch MDM, as I don't observe any similar crashes on any of my test devices. Even on the two devices which are enrolled in the Xcode Server Profile Manager MDM and one in Jamf Pro SEB doesn't crash and the single app mode works. WebContentFilter is used by parental controls, but it doesn't look like you're a K12 school... Best is to use the 2.1.50 beta version. There you can initiate sending the logs in the iOS Settings app in the SEB section (and also I improved logging to better be able to analyze such problems). Those students could use the VoiceOver accessibility feature of iOS (can be activated in the iOS Settings app) to read the text displayed in the browser window. Inspera uses Amazon cloud servers, those probably also would need to be included in the Web Content Filter allowed list. But I think this would get too complicated, I'm working on integrating WKWebView, when that is finalized next month, that UIWebView issue should be fixed generally. WKWebView should help making SEB more stable, as crashes in the web engine (which runs separate processes) don't crash the app itself.

Hi, I guess you're using macOS 10.15(.7) Catalina? I realized that the new macOS single app/lockdown/kiosk Assessment Mode/AAC doesn't stop the macOS built-in screen recording on macOS 10.15.7 Catalina. On macOS 11(.2.2), when screen recording is running, SEB doesn't display any windows or just a grey rectangle, but you can still press cmd-Q to quit SEB. So this is obviously a bug in the macOS Assessment Mode. As a workaround in SEB 2.3, you would need to create a configuration with the setting Preferences...

The setting is currently only available in the Preferences window of SEB 2.3 for macOS. You can also add the mentioned key enableAAC = false manually to an unencrypted SEB config file.

Hi, Was the user on macOS 11 Big Sur? There was an issue with checking system processes in SEB 2.2.2. But actually it seems that PhotoMetaEdit process is installed in an invisible .Dashlane directory. Dashlane is a password manager. Maybe it isn't compatible with SEB. But anyways, update to SEB 2.3, which might fix that issue.

Yes, in the next major release sometimes in Q2/2021. It will likely only work on macOS 10.15.7 and later, as Apple only then started to support WebRTC in the WKWebView embedded browser framework.

In the just released version SEB 2.3 for macOS, for running the Zoom app in the background, you have to disable the new AAC Assessment Mode, which is by default used on macOS 10.15.4 or later (as that built-in macOS kiosk mode prevents applications running in the background from accessing the network). Disable the setting Preferences / Security / "Use Assessment Mode (AAC) if available", settings key enableAAC = false).

If you created SEB settings manually, then the setting Exam / Use Browser Exam Key (send in HTTP header) is disabled. Maybe that's the actual reason why it worked with those settings.

I think I actually know why Google doesn't want to trust the browser: The Config Key (and Browser Exam Key) hashes are being sent by SEB to Moodle using custom HTTP request header fields. I guess Google Authentication doesn't like custom request headers. As far as I remember SEB 3.1.1 doesn't send these headers in requests which don't go to the main domain, which might be the case if you open the authentication in a new window. But I'm actually only guessing, as I don't understand your settings in...

Links requesting to be opened in a new window is the default setting, which is also active in the Moodle configuration. Maybe it has to do with some issue with popup windows being blocked. Our Windows developer @dbuechel would need to look into the problem, but he would need a way how to reproduce it (we are not using Google Authentication).

No, because this is almost impossible given how the kiosk mode on macOS works (it is only active as long as SEB is the foreground application). We filed a feature request to Apple and discussed that it would be great if they would provide a kiosk mode in macOS which would allow to run several applications. You're right that there should no password be required for the config file generated via Moodle's manual config. I guess this is either a bug in SEB 3.0.1 or she somehow opened another SEB config file before, as the dialog is mentioning a config file for reconfiguring the client and in the second dialog it's asking for the password of the client settings (which are saved on the computer). You need to configure the application with a SEB configuration file. With those settings you controll the security (you need to set a quit password so the app can only be quit by the exam supporters, you need to use the default settings for the kiosk/lockdown mode, you can allow specific additional URLs etc.). Unfortunately there is a bug in iOS 14 (it's a regression of a bug which already existed in iOS 9) which allows to tap the back link on the top left of the display in the iOS Status Bar to return the the app, from which SEB was started (often that would be Safari). The AAC single app mode stays active, so students are then locked in that app and the device needs to be force restarted. Hopefully Apple fixes this soon in an iOS update. Not in SEB 3.x for now (only when we bring the Additional Resources feature back), but you might be able to do that with JavaScript in Moodle. You would need to ask a web developer (who ideally knows Moodle) how to do that. There are also forums on moodle.org which might help.

I suggest reading the SEB manual. You can configure the size and position of both the main browser window where the exam is displayed and of additional browser windows. So you could display the exam window on the left of the screen with for example 1000 pixels width and the calculator window on the right with some fitting size. Then the windows overlap only partly and even students who don't know that you can switch windows with Alt-Tab on Windows should be able to find the window again.

This problem has most likely been solved in the latest release, SEB 3.1.1. Please use that version. In no case we can support any outdated SEB version. So before reporting any issue, please test if it still happens with the current (latest) SEB version.

Do you mean a buit-in feature of Windows 10 or a third-party solution which requires to install some driver/software? SEB can block processes configured in Config Tool/Applications/Prohibited Processes from running. So if you find out which process is used to connect to the smart TV, you could add it to your SEB settings to block it. Let us know if you find out which process to block, then we can add it as a preset in future versions.

SEB is using an embedded UIWebView, in the next few months we will transition to WKWebView. There is no Selenium support for SEB and I don't know if WebDriver is supported in WKWebView. As none of our (contributing funds) SEB Consortium members requested such a support, it is a low priority feature request, which probably could be considered for the 2022 roadmap.
