There is no need to keep a big list of older releases available. vLatest -> vLatest-5 seems very reasonable. I understand your point of view but I want to explain better mine: if the package manager works starting from the sources, like the one i am working on, we keep a reference of the sources to download and a hash of the archive, to verify validity of the download whenever a user requires installation of the package.
