You are absolutely right that it is common practice to put the add-on text above. However, I've checked the standards document https://www.gs1.org/sites/default/files/docs/barcodes/GS1_General_Specifications.pdf and it doesn't tell anything about the placement of the add-on other than putting it right and parallel from the main barcode. So I don't think it would violate any standard or documented consent. In any case, I thought it's better to ask and be rejected than never ask in the first place...
