Yeah everyone I know disables the my documents Ondrive connection rubbish in windows, and you should too, especially if you're into retro games and fan games. Just asking for trouble..
I did a big map audit and cleanout a couple of years back but I think gilolate's maps are still included in the pack although I think Mazims newer ones are of better quality. Yes there's a few of us Aussies here who have wanted proper native nations for Australia but obviously that's a bit of an undertaking so it never happened. It is possible to mod natives though as Mazim did a extended native nations pack a few years back here so he could probably answer any questions you have: https://source...
Oooooh cool! Nice work!
I'm not sure on the file size limits, but you might find Mazim's work interesting as he added new nations but also added new native nations including more american native nations and Asian native peoples as you suggested. Here are the threads... Mazim's ongoing New Nations mod (adds lots more players allowing bigger games): https://sourceforge.net/p/freecol/discussion/141200/thread/658935e76f/ Mazim's ongoing New Indians mod (more American natives and even asian natives for Asia maps): https://s...
Hey guys, Obviously most people just uploading their FreeCol mods to posts in this forum, however stuff can get burried pretty quickly so I thought I'd share some useful info that people may not be aware of. Stian just informed me that FreeCol has it's own section on the popular modding site NexusMods here which is cool: https://www.nexusmods.com/freecol Which then reminded me that because we have a FreeCol IndieDB site it means people can upload FreeCol mods to their sister site ModDB which is probably...

Ahh thanks David, I never did get to adding mazims mod to the 3rd party area, kept forgetting! Also I noticed that the github version is just a copy now and I have no idea how to do change submissions on SF lol!

Hey guys, I was just chatting on another forum with people about how awesome FreeCol is and someone said they they've never played it as they hate the graphics and want oldschool 2D top down graphics. While I prefer the 2.5D isometric era I do understand and respect his preference as many people have a nostalgic love for the original 2D era. It's a shame that there are Col fans out there who won't touch this project and all the great work put into it because they don't like the graphics style. His...
This is very cool.. presumably if these 2 plus your original finished mods are activated that allows for 20 player (original 4 nations+freecol extra 4 nations+your extra 4 nations+set 2's 4 nations+set 3's 4 nations) games??? If so that's awesome. I still haven't added your original finished new nations mod into FreeCol's 3rd party mods area yet, been too busy sorry. No worries, I will NOT add these 2 extra ones in since they're unfinished and fantastical.
My current implementation of river rendering just ignores the river styles -- meaning there is no way to avoid having rivers being connected if they are on adjacent tiles. I can see that being able to override the river style is nice for making good looking maps, but I think allowing the style to be overridden has too many negative aspects: 1. It makes it more difficult for the player to quickly determine if a movement bonus is granted or not. 2. New styles and variations are not automatically used...

Saw your email. They look beautiful mate, and oh man if you end up animating them that will add so much life to the game. Super cool! But yes the possibility of a completely different river system breaking all the existing maps is a concern. Up until recently there were still some old maps by Gilolat with broken river graphics caused by the last river system change a decade or so ago. However I think I went in and manually fixed them in the editor when I did the big map overhaul a year or so ago....

Extra info for those trying to replicate... If the mod is not loaded FreeCol will start up just fine even if you have zip files in it's mod folder. ahh right.. those things haha.. it's been a few years since my last bug report. ;) Okay I put a 3rd party mod zip back into the mods area and started up Freecol 0.12.0 and sure enough it jammed again on the splash startup screen. However thankfully yes the log file was still updated and I can see it complaining about some stuff that will hopefully make sense to you. File attached!

AH HA! I figured it out on my own. Stian said the other day to Mazim that mods can be loaded from zips here: https://sourceforge.net/p/freecol/discussion/141200/thread/658935e76f/?page=1#9eb5 If that's the case I thought it was a bit odd that all the 3rd party mods included with FreeCol releases are not zipped and are sitting in extracted folders. So I figured I'd experiment and stuck a zipped copy of a mod into the data/mods folder. I forgot I put it there so I failed to realise until now it was...

Weird.. I had no troubles attacking them as they all closed in on my territory. Man I hope the author of this game comes back day.

Awesome! Yeah while I inserted a whole lot of your excellent maps into the main game last year it's a bit different with this mod since as you say this isn't really appropriate for inserting into the main vanilla game and is best in the optional 3rd party mods area in the FreeCol releases. I think I originally said in this thread a year or so ago that I was going to add your stuff (via github) into FreeCol as Mike was busy, however I'll hold off as that was pre Stian's return so he might feel differently...

Ahh cool.. I'm not sure if anyone left around here knew about support for mod loading from zip files, as no one has said a thing about that over the past few years in any of the mod threads and currently every single 3rd party mod included in FreeCol releases (some of which have been there for like a decade) are not in zips.
Oh wow! I'd wondered where you'd gone Mazim and if you'd ever release new versions of your awesome mods. So if this is your final one then assume you're now okay with it being included in the 3rd party mods section of future FreeCol releases?

@alexandrmus great music.. you're really really good man! :) Although I think as others have pointed out while the intention was Colonization they sound a bit influenced by a different era in history.. eg I think of medieval times as I listen o them which I think is because one of your main instrument sounds is one people often hear in medieval songs. Not sure of its name.. a Psaltery maybe? or a vielle? Probably the former.. @stiangre yup going in that more orchestral direction definitely gives...
Any news on putting the new hill & mountain designs into the latest build? Had some complaints about the brown lumps in the groups lol. I've tried to assure people the brown lumps are just a temporary thing and not to worry. If the new ones can't be inserted for whatever technical reason then perhaps we could revert to old hill & mountain designs again for the time being?

A few weeks ago I shared around the main classic Col video which has a got a few thousand hits and has also hopefully referred some fans here.. however this weekend I'm going to start sharing the FreeCol tour video itself around the Civ and retro communities. Hope it brings you guys some more fans and talent eager to help out. :)
@calebrw Can do as I recently gave an update on the groups to @stiangre and the dev email followers so I'll copy and paste most of what I said here for you mate. :) I set about fixing a fan community issue in that Colonization had no social media presence and no forums were left either. So I created the Colonization Fans facebook, Discord and Reddit groups for fans to get together and talk about the classic game while I also created these groups to promote FreeCol content bringing more fans and programmer...

Yup @s02er has either accidentally clicked the follow button on the top right corner of this thread (as I can't see a post from him prior) and hasn't realised that posting notifications contain the username in the @sourceforge mailing system so he thinks I'm personally harassing him from my own email lol! Or he's accidentally clicked the user follow button on the top right corner of my profile page while having a little friendly stalky stalky session (kind of like the SF equivalent of stalking an...
Bahahahahaha yes that's it.. you've figured out the conspiracy.. I have a SPECIAL secret mailing list that pesters random people I've never seen before (seriously who are you even??) every time I post on sourceforge.. honestly.. some people need their heads checked lol..
oh wow! I thought you were gonna leave this one as you'd figured out a workaround. Thanks man! :)
That's looking much better!
Thank you!! Been asking for weeks in the dev chat and getting silence. I'll go share the news with all the fan groups! :)
Just wanted to say that I LOVE this so much. Thank you so much Stian! :)
Since all us non-programmer fans have been chomping at the bit for a new nightly release one of the members of the Col Fans discord was kind enough to share a compiled version of your latest dev build so I'm finally able to see the new graphics! The new blending technique is very nice, Misiulos new grassland colours look nice too, and omg the animating oceans and clouds are so cool Stian and add so much life and atmosphere.. really really good stuff! :) However my eyes were quickly distracted by...

Hi @arikande , I don’t know if this project is still going as it’s been over a year since the last activity but I hope it’s not dead as what you’ve created is truly amazing. I grew up playing Sid Meier’s Colonization and the Mars scenario in Civilization 2 so for you to combine these 2 things together into a standalone game is just a brilliant idea! Also reminds me a wee bit of Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri too which I loved. I help out the FreeCol project a bit with their marketing/media presence as...
Oh wow, thank you so much Stian! I look forward to seeing it in the next release! I didn't lodge a ticket as I didn't think you guys wanted to be bothered about 3rd party mod issues. So thanks again mate! :) I was originally going to show people it in my FreeCol HD Tour video however I've already released it to the world now so it's too late for that one sadly. However I think I'll take some nice HD 1080p pictures of it to show people in the Col groups I run as some people have complained about the...
@calebrw the website overhaul was done by @wintertime . I can't find the original dev email where he first wrote instructions however winter wrote full instructions on how to setup the ruby and jekyll stuff in the website news area here: http://www.freecol.org/news/first-steps-for-contributing-to-freecol-website.html The news post was a modified copy of the instructions he wrote in this post below should you wish to reply to him and ask anything: https://sourceforge.net/p/freecol/discussion/1412...
EDIT: Mike has kindly updated the front page text. Part 1 of this job is done! oh wow! What a wonderful surprise to wake up to! :) I wasn't sure if you'd have the time to watch these @mpope so I'm thrilled you've watched not just the FreeCol video but the classic Col one too! Thank you! :) I'm glad you enjoyed the 'Col like games' part as like I said above I'd received some criticism for spending too much time on that but I really wanted to show Col fans that there's more fun options than they think out there, naturally putting FreeCol front and center. Hahaha oh don't worry...

BTW speaking of changing game graphics, I noticed the other day that the old 3rd party Wooden interface mod that comes with FreeCol has stopped working sadly. No ones played with FreeCol's graphics mods as much as you @misiulo so do you have idea what could be wrong with it?
Hey guys, I already sent this to the dev team but now it's time to go public here! I'm sorry this has taken so long as I've been promising you guys for 3 friggin years that I'd release a big new FreeCol HD tour video to help promote FreeCol and I'm pleased to say it's finally done and online. My original 2018 recordings were starting to get a bit dated so I had to re-film the entire intro this year to talk about all the cool developments over the last few years such as more maps in the main game,...

lol.. mate haven't you heard of the resize button, not to mention using proper upscaling tricks. ;) Colonization for Windows had higher resolution backgrounds that were twice the size of the old the DOS version (see attached comparison image) so they'd upscale even better too. Speaking of the Master of Magic remake I don't know if you're on any of the MoM Discord groups but there's a fellow there making gorgeous AI upscaled versions of the old Wizard portraits to insert into the remake when it comes...

2 - It's been ages now but I remember having similar problems. I think I bribed the nation and the natives to go to war so they hated each other, I also kept giving the village gifts so they liked me, and no doubt I needed a expert missionary as well. I know I got the enemy mission out of there eventually so make sure you do all that haha.

That would be interesting. If you have any troubles talk to Mazim as he did the extra nations packs for FreeCol so he knows all about modding them in and the bugs that can happen.
very cool man
Yeah I remember the REF attacked 3 different coastal cities in my big game a few years back. One way down in Argentina, my capital in Brazil at the mouth of the Amazon, and also my 'Panama Canal' city up in central America. I think with the 'Panama Canal' city I got attacked from both sides too ie from the Pacific in the east and the Atlantic in the west lol.
wow.. that would be something haha Mazims XXL Huge World map that I added to the nightly releases was 300x180 and it seemed ridiculously huge.. so 1000x1000.. omg hahaha
I miss the old wooden AI but couldn't seem to get the legacy wooden AI mod working sadly. A more modern UI would be interesting but I'm not sure if it can be solved with a bunch of images as how it's implemented in the game plays a big part. Eg I would have loved to have put in the old Colonization Europe screen as a mod for myself but I think the FreeCol Europe background is a small paper pattern in title formation and may not support a large image sadly.
