Tested it out, changing the sent folder to local doesn't affect this. Neither does Drafts. PS: Unless the "factor" of RAM is in the thousands, no RAM isn't an issue and since we're using SSDs there isn't a swapfile available anymore anyway. If it's of any help, this is the strace while thunderbird freezes for 2 minutes for a 7MB file: ""madvise(0x7f38e8000000, 4194304, MADV_DONTNEED) = 0 --- SIGVTALRM {si_signo=SIGVTALRM, si_code=SI_TKILL, si_pid=24642, si_uid=1000} --- rt_sigreturn({mask=[]}) =...

Currently it is unfortunally not reasonable to wait minutes for an attachment. I mean if thunderbird would say okay and keep doing stuff in background maybe, but right now it freezes and GNOME will even suggest to kill thunderbird...

Enigmail (1.9.8.3) considerably slows down sending of emails when signing ones with larger attachments (e.g. 8MB) -- up to minutes what otherwise would be seconds in our network. Encryption is not used, only digital signing. I would be okay with not signing attachments at all, but signing only the body of an email, but I cannot find a way to have Enigmail do that. There is "extensions.enigmail.encryptAttachments" in advanced options, but when only signing not encrypting it doesn't seem to have an...
