Hi Patrick, I need more information to troubleshoot and duplicate this issue. a) What flavor and version of Linux? b) Raspberry Pi? When I tried this on Xubuntu 24.04, I noticed that the first time one starts fldigi, there is an option to setup hamlib. Click "use hamlib" and setup those fields. I have noticed that in the Fldigi Configure -> Config Dialog menu, there is no specific entry related to hamlib as was seen during the initial configuration. Do you see the same thing? As an experiment, move...

Hi Scott, No worries - I can't throw stones about being too analytical. :-) I shall make those changes in the next version of AHRL (probably April 2026). Please let me know if you have other issues. I'm also curious to know, after you use AHRL for a while, if you like it. Many thanks and 73, Andy KB1OIQ ..
Hi Scott, I think I see where you got confused. What if the words had been as follows: Download the files from Sourceforge: Replace "VER" with the most recent version available, e.g. "v27" andy_VER.tar.gz, e.g. andy_v27.tar.gz md5sum_VER.txt, e.g. md5sum_v27.txt move the file to /root (e.g. sudo mv andy_VER.tar.gz /root) If I made the change shown above, would that have been clearer to you? Thanks for your patience and feedback. This is how we make things better. :-) 73, Andy KB1OIQ ..
Quoting from the GETTING_STARTED guide: Installation Instructions The network (wired or wireless) MUST be working properly or the installation will fail. Download the files from Sourceforge: Replace "v26d" with the most recent version available andy_VER.tar.gz, e.g. andy_v26d.tar.gz md5sum_vVER.txt, e.g. md5sum_v26d.txt move the file to /root (e.g. sudo mv andy_VER.tar.gz /root) These instructions seem pretty clear to me (after fixing the "vVER" typo). Hi Scott, First of all, I cannot know with certainty the directory which contains your downloaded file. Most probably it is in your download directory. That directory name can vary but it is probably a subdirectory of your home directory. I recommend that you bring up a graphical file manager in the menu and find it. You click on the directories to navigate the directory hierarchy just like you would do in Windoze or Mac. Once you find the file, you need to move it to the /root directory. The GETTING_STARTED...

HI Dennis, I prefer that the "News" portion of the website not be used to report problems. I use this area to report status. That said, while I have fixed AHRL to work on Debian 13, I have not released it. My plan is to do my next AHRL release in April 2026 after Ubuntu releases its next long term support version 26.04. I will check the other supported versions of Linux, and if they have also been upgraded, I'll try to include support for those in AHRL. My plan is to release this code before I travel...

Hi Theo, I can't put VarAC into AHRL since it is neither Free Software, nor Open Source Software nor compatibly licensed. That's the issue with all(?) of the Winlink related software. Winlink is a proprietary system. If you can show me a license that states otherwise, I'll reconsider. 73, Andy KB1OIQ ..
Excellent! Thank you, Theo, for confirming that this works. :-) I believe this solution will also work for people who discovered that inserting a USB thumb drive caused Chirp to appear. Now, it all makes sense. I've found the source of the problem and I'll surely fix it for the next release. Hello Pete, Theo, et al, This is VERY strange indeed! I have received scattered reports of Linux Mint and Chirp not behaving, but have never been able to nail it down. The data from your replies suggests that there is something suspicious about the AHRL installation procedure which is causing this problem. I cannot fathom what that could be. HI Theo, I need a lot of information from you in order to attempt to duplicate this issue. 1) What flavor and version of Linux are you running? 2) What version of AHRL have you installed? 3) What is the application shown in the first screenshot that says "Open log directory"? 4) What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Hi Marvin, Thanks for trying AHRL, and thank you for your feedback. The sound issue isn't specific to AHRL. I've seen a LOT of references to it on the internet. I created fix_sound in the hope that, while a bit inconvenient, it would work. It works for me and many others. I agree that the sound issue is a nuisance. fix_sound will only work if your Linux flavor is using the ALSA sound system. I don't recall what Linux Mint Cinnamon is using. Hi Terry, The Linux command line is sensitive to the "current working directory". Commands will only work on the files in the current working directory unless explicitly stated otherwise. The installation script installs things in the /usr/local directory tree. (This makes me think that I should modify the code to specifically check /usr/local in case it has its own partition.) It may work OK if you mount that large partition as /usr/local, but the details are outside of the desired scope of AHRL discussions. 73,...

Tnx and 73 Ed W8EO Hi Ed, wsjtx stashes its log in a non-obvious (IMHO) location: ~/.local/share/WSJT-X/wsjtx.log In Linux, directories whose names start with a dot (e.g. .local) are hidden unless the user explicitly "asks" to see them. In a GUI based file manager, one typically has to enable it to show hidden files and directories. At the command line, the "ls" command won't show them, but "ls -a" will show them....
<shudder> Hi Ed,</shudder> That global change of permissions is probably going to a lot of things. It will be impossible to fix this without reinstalling everything. That was definitely NOT the thing to do. This reminds me of a time when I was a newbie that I wanted to write a floppy with a low level command and overwrite my hard drive instead. There was no way to recover it. I did not have a backup. I am now VERY careful with that command. 73, Andy KB1OIQ ..
HI Ed, Like any computer program, the setup is key, and this is also true for wsjtx. I don't have, nor have I ever used, a Yaesu FT891 so I can't guide you for that explicit radio. In wsjtx, go to the File -> Settings menu and notice that there are many tabs (General, Radio, Audio, etc). Fill in your callsign and grid in the General tab. Pick your rig in the Radio tab (I see Yaesu FT-891 in the list, so it is supported). I don't know how the FT891 is connected to the computer. I'll assume USB for...
HI Ed, The "dummy output" issue is described at the end of the GETTING_STARTED document. You did the right thing by running the fix_sound workaround script. Good job! Have fun and 73, Andy| KB1OIQ ..
Hi Ed, This is great news! I'm happy to hear it!! Have FUN!! 73, Andy KB1OIQ ..
HI Don, I'm not quite sure what this means: "Debian 12 didn't have menus installed", but in any case, I'm glad to hear that you've fixed it. Have fun(!) and 73, Andy KB1OIQ ..
Also ... did you remember to reboot after completion of the installation? 73, Andy KB1OIQ ..
HI Don, Which version of Linux are you using? There are several different types of menus. You should see a menu entitled, "Andy Ham Radio Linux". Can you post a screenshot? 73, Andy KB1OIQ ..
Hi Ed, Quoting from the GETTING_STARTED document: Some software will ask questions during the installation: - When asked "What is the username of the default user?", enter the name of the account where ham radio software will be run. For example, if your user name is "andy", enter "andy" (without the double quotes). - For dump1099, the recommended answer is "no" - For xastir, the recommended answer is "yes" In this case, the question is slightly different, and the text is more of an FYI. Hit the...
HI Ed, The screenshots are extraordinarily helpful. Thank you for attaching them to your posts. cd Downloads - that command is correct ls - that command is also correct but notice that andy_v26c.tar.gz is NOT THERE. I have no idea where the filed was placed after you downloaded it, but it isn't in the Downloads directory, or possibly the file was moved afterwards. Subsequent commands that wanted to move the file correctly failed with "No such file or directory" since the file isn't there. However,...
Hi Ed, There are so many primers out there. Unfortunately, I don't have one to recommend. I often use the terminal interface because: a) I've learned it, but yes, the learning curve was steep, and b) I can type commands faster than I can click the mouse. I often want to do things that the GUI won't do, but are easy on the command line. I'm happy that both interfaces exist. Of course, learning something new is frustrating at times. I try to remember what it was like when I was a Linux newbie. I hope...
Hi Ed, This isn't an AHRL problem, this is a Linux newbie problem (an no disparagement is intended). We were all newbies at one time, so let me try to explain. When typing at the command line, all of the commands are sensitive to the current working directory. Commands like "cd" and "pwd" are commonly used to "change directory" and "print working directory". When you downloaded the file, it was placed in the /home/ed/Downloads directory. I strongly suspect that you did not "cd" into that directory...
Hi Ed, Please bring up a terminal window and type the following commands, then send me the screenshot. sudo -i cd /root ls andy* Thanks, and 73, Andy KB1OIQ ..
Hi Ed, My first guess is that wsjtx is not correctly configured to talk to your rig. 73, Andy KB1OIQ ..
Hi Ed, The error message is quite clear: the file /root/andy_v26c.tar.gz does not exist (no such file or directory). Quoting from the GETTING_STARTED document: Download the file from Sourceforge: * andy_VER.tar.gz (replacing VER with the actual version information) * move the file to /root (e.g. sudo mv andy_VER.tar.gz /root) I'd say that you either didn't do those steps, or you didn't do them correctly. 73, Andy KB1OIQ ..
