This would work great. I would still have to understand better what you mean by "...switch between thumbnails, bookmarks, ...", because in Evince and the like I have always only used thumbnails, so I'm not familiar with bookmarks, but I think it shouldn't be difficult to figure that out once it's there.
That's what I currently do to, but it takes a lot of time. The pages are consecutive in the result, but they are not always the same number of pages (one student could need two extra sheets and another one 3). Therefore I can't quickly split the file, say, every so many pages. I now return them digitally, but this is actually becoming less of an issue with the schools opening up again. Who knows how long they will keep open, though!? Adding bookmarks to the file would help with the splitting, but...
That's a great idea indeed. Thanks.

Ooops, thanks to you and shame on me! I have been using tlmgr for at least 4 years and I have to admit that I never rtfm.
Which directory should I choose for TeX?

I did install 1.2.11 and it does look like the linker is finding an older version. I don't really know how to make the linker find the right one. What I have tried, based on googling around, is: export LDFLAGS="-L/path/to/zlib-1.2.11/" export CFLAGS="-I/path/to/zlib-1.2.11/" export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/path/to/zlib-1.2.11/ export ZLIB_LIBS="-L/home/andrea/Downloads/graphviz/zlib-1.2.11/" and now I get: make all-am make[1]: Entering directory /home/andrea/Downloads/graphviz/libpng-1.6.30'...
