In my opinion Solidworks might be a better option for your task. You need to go Tools > Mass properties or click special icon, in the Mass properties box you can find many material properties such as measures of surface area, volume, mass etc. I bet there are more software for this, but we are using Artec scanners (for scanning paleontological finds, casts, original fossil specimens) with original software, that have a built-in plugin that allows you to export 3D model into SW directly.
Seems like dd means the erroe between two meshes and the Global Alignment tries to minimize the error between all neignbor meshes IMO
