I stopped by to listen for awhile. It looked like people were having fun. The fact that you all were in Europe meant that the lag was prohibitive for me, should I have wanted to play. Thanks for setting this up. Another note: The sound in Jam 1 (Listeners) was not great, so I just connected to Jam 1, where it was fine. I don't know about Jam 2 (Listeners). I just checked. My ping times to servers in the Midwest are around 100 ms, which is quite impossible. Maybe you can play with JSW tho. S/he is just outside of Boston. I would love to, but the lag between us would be terrible. I’ve been playing with someone who’s only a few miles from me, and when the lag is over 50 ms (I think because of other Internet traffic), it’s painful. It’s hard to stay together and hard to get back if you get off. Not fun. That said, how about connecting to a server midway between??? Would that work? The Activity Monitor takes a lot of CPU cycles. I know not to rely on it. I checked it just to see whether there was something running that I wasn't aware of that was taking a lot of the CPU time, but there was nothing other than Jamulus. The effect I am seeing is not short-lived, but characterized by a gradual increase over minutes, and then a decrease initiated by (maybe) opening & closing the Settings window??

Lots of CPU left, according to Activity monitor. Chrome running, minimized. I tried both addressing the server as localhost and not, and there was little difference, perhaps localhost slightly slower. Wired connection, not WiFi. Wired mic. I will try quitting Chrome and see if it matters. On Sat, May 23, 2020 at 09:06 DonC doncor@users.sourceforge.net wrote: Other programs running on the PC? background services running? What can cause the Ping time to my server (running on the same machine as the client) to increase to a large value? For a period of time, it's 0-1-2 sec to ping my server, then "something happens" and it increases to a high value--17, 18, 20 ms with an overall delay beyond usability. I have written a bug report because I am quite sure that minimizing the Jamulus Server window can do this, but there's something else as well, which I haven't been able to chase down. What could it be?

Re: the Mac setup I have a Mac laptop and I started in the same place where your friends are. The internal mic/speakers are pretty good; let's use those! However, serious problem: If you are using the built-in mic and standing in front of the built-in speakers, you are setting up a classic feedback loop. When you turn up the volume, you get some amazing screeches. Solution: First I bought some Bluetooth headphones for output. With the BT headphones and the built-in mic, the feedback was eliminated...

In my experience, if you change inputs/outputs with System Preferences or with Jamulus preferences while Jamulus is running, you sometimes (always?) run the risk of things getting scrambled. I have seen that same error message, but it has never persisted after quitting Jamulus, making sure the input/output I want is selected in System Preferences, and then restarting Jamulus.

We're having latency issues also. You said: you can reduce your latency by connecting locally (no point in going out to the public net and back, it just adds latency) How can I do that?

We had a big delay problem one day and yes, it's possible to compensate but it's not fun. It feels like you forge ahead regardless, with the other(s) always pulling you back. It felt like a struggle. We were keeping it together but it didn't feel like making music.

I am in Eugene, Oregon and have a server called Chamber Music. I play bassoon and have a bunch of music for oboe, flute, bassoon trios, and a few duets for flute & bassoon. None of these in the public domain, and most not originally scored for that combination of instruments (mostly string trios), but playable. Given an email address, I could get parts to you. I have a flutist friend who is almost up to speed with Jamulus and who is interested in playing trios, but need an oboe. Any oboe players...

Exactly. I think we need to work on reducing the barriers to use that Jamulus presents--and I'm not talking about just using the software. I could figure out the software but I didn't have the right hardware, and I didn't even know that I didn't. It has taken awhile to get functioning. Would a "getting started" doc, that people could just download, help? If people have complex issues or issues with specific setups, send them to the forums but some people are intimidated by having to search through...

Also, on the alert that informs you that the software cannot be installed because it's from an unverified developer, there is a [ ? ] button. Click on that and it walks you through how to grant an exception.

FWIW I have had the same problem, with the interesting complication that after thrashing around not understanding which had to open first, client or server, that I managed to have a client process running but no client window. (This prevented me from starting a client after I'd started the server.) Killing all Jamulus processes and starting over in the proper order, of course, fixed everything.
