#445 Budget minute value is difficult to edit

(Ubuntu 8.04.2)

Mouse-clicking the budget time field will not select any of its fields, so deleting a single number of the minute field works and will set it to 0. But once the minutes are highlighted, as may happen after having typed Tab in another field, I can't overwrite the minutes at all. What is really insane is that typing a number in this circumstances will insert it into the next non-highlighted part, which is the seconds field! The minutes value, however, remains unchanged then.

The current workaround seems kind of absurd: If I want to type over the highlighted minutes value, I need to cancel the selection first, in order to just enter numbers which then will not be inserted, but will effectively "type over" the former field content.

TaskCoach should clearly stick to established conventions for editing, inserting and overwriting field contents instead of being unintuitive here.

Proposed fix: TaskCoach should enable overwriting each budget time field value even when it is highlighted (or not allow their highlighting at all).

A fix was made and checked into the source code repository of Task Coach. The fix will be part of the next release. You will get another notification when that release is available with the request to install the new release and confirm that your issue has indeed been fixed.

Because a fix has been made for this bug report, the priority of this report has been lowered to 1 and its resolution has been set to 'Fixed'.

    Thanks,

With TaskCoach 0.72.3 (still under Ubuntu 8.04.2), the bug is still there: I can't type over the minutes (or the seconds) once they are highlighted. (Pressing Delete then sets them to zero - I don't remember if this is new.) Typing over highlighted hours still works normally as before.

What has changed, however, is that tabbing through the hours, minutes and seconds of the budget value will not highlight them, so the user is less likely to be hit by this bug.

Nevertheless, many people might still be tempted to highlight the minutes or the seconds just to type them over, which is still possible using Shift + arrow keys. This is when the user will face the undesired behaviour exposed above.

So I don't see my recommended fix being implemented.

    Hi Yves,

I changed the behaviour of the 'masked' controls (like the one for entering budget and fee) to not highlight automatically, but you are right; if the user highlights the minutes herself than she still cannot type over them. I think that not being able to overwrite highlighted text is a bug in wxPython, the underlying graphical toolkit. At least it is not behaviour we programmed. I'll do some more investigation.

    Thanks for testing, Frank

Overwriting the highlighted text works on Windows. So it might be either platform specific or wxPython version specific (I think I have a more recent version of wxPython on my Unbuntu systems than on Windows).

    Cheers, Frank
