I just installed Pidgin 2.4 and noticed that unchecking "Show buddy list entry in taskbar" seems to no longer to function correctly.

That is, when I uncheck "Show buddy list entry in taskbar", I expect there to be no icon in the running programs icon area of the Windows taskbar. However, when running 2.4, the icon is always displayed -- checking and unchecking seems to have no effect.

As a test I just re-installed Pidgin 2.3.1 and the function works correctly, so the problem seems to be only when I run 2.4.

Did the Pidgin folks break something in 2.4? Or does Extended Prefs need an update for that function to work correctly in 2.4? Or is it just me (shudder at the thought)?

This is working for me in Linux with 2.4.0 and Extended Prefs 0.7.

Are you running Extended Prefs 0.7 and pidgin, on Windows?

Same problem here running Pidgin 2.4.0 and Extended Prefs 0.7 on Windows XP SP2 with all latest updates as of today (if that info is helpful at all). Any chance for a quick fix?

This may be a GTK+ bug, I am trying to find out for sure. In the meantime, if people could tell me what version of GTK+ they are running and if it changed from the 2.3.1 -> 2.4.0 upgrade.

Just using whatever came with Pidgin 2.4.0 here. I believe that's 2.10.0? Should I give the latest stable a try and see if that helps?

There was an upgrade of GTK+ (2.12.8) with pidgin 2.4.0.

If people could install the 2.12.1 version from the pidgin sf.net page:

    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=235&package_id=119698

to see if this fixes the problem and report back either way. I believe this is the reason for this function not working.

Installing 2.12.1 Rev-B on XP SP2 with all latest MS updates seemed to fix it for me. Pidgin is running and no entry in the taskbar! Thanks General!

Well since the problem was resolved with a different (newer) version of GTK+, my assumption would be that there may be a bug with the newer 2.12.8 version of GTK+ and not with Extended Prefs.

Regardless, I'll check into GTK+ and see if there have been any bugs reported about the function call that is used to hide the Buddy List window.

I'm also experiencing different behavior w/ 2.4.0 and Ext Prefs 0.7 on Windows 2000 SP/4 (all available updates).

    Currently GTK+ 2.12.8 rev a is installed.

When Buddy List is minimized to try there isn't a taskbar entry. There is a taskbar entry when the Buddy List is displayed. Before the 2.4.0 update there was not a taskbar entry when the buddy list was visible.

I'll install GTK+ 2.12.8 rev b. May be that will correct the problem.

This bug is caused by the newer version of GTK+ 2.12.8 that is shipped with 2.4.0

Downgrading to the GTK+ version that was with pidgin 2.3.1 (GTK+ 2.12.1 Rev-B) alleviates this problem. See link from my below post to download the 2.12.1 RevB version.

Is the extended preference ever going to be updated for the new releases?

Is there a problem with Ext Prefs and Pidgin 2.5.0?

  • Nobody/Anonymous

reverting back to gtk v2.12.1 from the latest version 2.12.12 Rev A fixes the problem.. are you going to fix this so we dont have to keep using outdated software?

To the last poster: What GTK+ version are you using? Are you on windows or linux?

I have 2.14.4 with pidgin 2.5.3 on linux and it hides the taskbar entry for me.

We are not using outdated software when it is a bug in GTK+ itself.

For Windows users, there is a problem with GTK+. Please see:
