Oddly enough, it only seems to happen when Max is facing in
that direction. I tried reproducing it on my own (without
the savegame) at first, and I entered the room from the
other direction, with Max facing right. It didn't happen then.
With Max facing left it happened even with my own savegame.

I've been able to repeat the glitch in 0.8.2, so at least
it's not a regression. I guess it's gone unnoticed because
it's an optional scene, and because Max has to face in the
right direction.

This also happens when Max does his dance after he says "but
I'm cute" at the Inn.

After a couple of attempts, I managed to get this to happen
with the original interpreter as well.

So it's not a bug in ScummVM but rather in the data files. Good. Lowering
priority
Next thing to wonder about then: Can we produce a workaround for this? Is it
worth the effort? Any idea what is causing the issue?
