Dear Mr. Parker,
with the BrlCAD 7.8.2 version I tried running archer. I
started archer in the mged command window. After the
archer windows builds up, I opend a new database.
During this I got the following error message:
can't find package blt
What's going wrong? I tried a volume primitive from the
upper menu bar. I got the same error message. Next I
tried the tank wizzard and I got same error message.
BrlCAD is running on Quantian a Knoppix-Debian based
Linux distribution. The kernel version is 2.6.7. I
build BrlCAD from the source and made a debian package.
The debian package build is based on the work from
Balbir Thomas. You find a sample on:
http://scientificcomputing.net/debian/packages/brlcad/
Next I installed the binary version 7.8.0 of brlcad for
Linux. I started mged out of the directory:
/usr/brlcad/bin
In the mged command window I opend the "Load Script
..." window and chosed the archer script from
/usr/brlcad/bin. The archer window opend. Opening a new
database I got the same error message as above. Again,
what's going wrong?
I would be glad, if You could help me.
Regards

Thanks for the report.. the reason it fails is that while the archer startup
script is installed, it has not yet been worked on extensively for all platforms
so a few minor issues like the compilation, configuration, and installation of
necessary archer modules (blt being one of them) hasn't been sorted out yet.
For what it's worth, when it is all working under Linux, you'll just type "archer"
on the UNIX command line. The estimated timeline for getting archer up and
running for all platforms is about one release iteration (i.e. a month) away.

Archer has since been cleaned up extensively with respect to how it finds and loads external packages. It was "unreleased" in 7.8.2 and is still alpha, but it should be working now. It works here at least now on Windows, Linux (Red Hat and Ubuntu tested), and Mac OS X). Cheers!
