Please reply with instructions on how to add the driver or the instructions on how and where to upload the content (makefile, etc...) ,
Many proprietary drivers use non-standard way to compile, so we can't give you general instruction that work for sure without knowing what to compile.
You should really try with v1.9.20. If you still want to try with v1.4, provide a link to the driver or give the name of the driver to be compiled and the pci id of the network card with lspci -nv | grep 200
