I have an Absoft V8.0 Fortran compiler with Plplot
V5.1 running on Windows XP. The version call responds
and then plinit fails with a run time error. Is this
version lacking a driver?
The support of PLplot for Windows was greatly enhanced a lot in the last months due to the introduction of the new CMake Build System (CBS). Please try the development version 5.7.2 using cmake to build the library. Binary packages will be available as well in the near future.

I've had this same problem using Visual C. I removed the
plver() function in my application and now it runs fine.
Not sure why the version function causes plinit to fail, but
removing it clears up the problem.
