multiple segmentation errors and failures

Tcl/Tk 8.4.2
Solaris 8 [SPARC]
gcc 3.2.2

8.4.1. currently installed

tcl8.4.2 makes without errors amd make tests produces
no errors [failures from 8.4.1 fixed]

However although tk8.4.2 makes without errors make test
fails spectacularly

bind.test
Segmentation Fault - core dumped

panedwindow.test
Segmentation Fault - core dumped

textDisp.test
Segmentation Fault - core dumped

Tests ended at Wed Mar 12 21:35:36 GMT 2003
all.tcl: Total 7107 Passed 6281 Skipped
800 Failed 26
Sourced 174 Test Files.
Files with failing tests: canvRect.test canvText.test
canvas.test entry.test image.test listbox

If I remake the 8.4.1 versions the tests behave as
before so I dont think anything significant has chaned
on our build system.

Any suggestions?

ps this is user ignorance but how is the verion detemined ?
