Works for me (FC7 64) - are you sure your X server is loading the RECORD extension? To check, run "xdpyinfo | grep RECORD". If you get nothing back, you've not got the extension loaded and the example will fail (though it should report "RECORD extension not found"). The example program just contacts the X server, which does the actual work of recording.
If you do have the RECORD extension loaded, could you provide more detail, including output from the example?
