v1.8.0 did not compile under kubuntu 5.10, so I tried
CVS. However the INSTALL.real file says to run
./configure, but there is no configure in CVS. I
understand I am meant to run
autoconf configure.in
but their is no configure.in either.

Perhaps there should be some mention of how to generate
./configure in the docs?

When you donwload the CVS package try to run the autogen.sh.
Than you have the file.
