jEdit ver: 4.3pre9

Sometimes when editing code using uppercase text, it is convenient or just happens at random that the either Left or Right Shift keys are held down when the Backspace key is used. Holding down either Right or Left Shift keys and hitting the Backspace key does not produce the desired Backspace operation of deleting the last character typed. Windows Notepad allows this operation so this should be a supported action in jEdit.

global options - shortcuts - built-in commands - delete previous character.

bind the secondary shortcut to shift-delete and you can use it that way.

Pending since it is probably only a shortcut problem.
But maybe it should be a default shortcut ?
