"Itch.IO is a massive games platform for indies, not a single 'game'."

    Posted 2020-05-27

Pros: It is extremely easy to get started as an indie game dev on itch.
No arcane curation process blocking your game from customers, no obstacles to posting your game for people to play
Just a basic virus/malware scan on upload, no up front fee like Steam and no required 30% cut from the platform taken out of each sale made.
You can set the percentage, and I set it at 15%, to support Itch.IO as it's a strong service, but it can be set as low as 0%!

Game pages are customizable, everything is user friendly. The community is helpful, and while game devs may find more developers than players at times in the included forums, the presence of other developers is good as far as I'm concerned, especially given that I not only publish indie games there but lots of big game asset packs.

Cons: I can't find a single complaint as a content creator, but the players may on occasion find the absence of thorough curation means a lot of buggy garbage makes its way onto the platform along with the true indie gaming gems.

That's why the comments and ratings systems on itch.io are essential to the platform. They help customers know what games have merit and which ones are little more than half-hearted asset flips. Itch customers make a huge impact when they rate content, I have made $40+ in sales on itch but have no reviews posted yet by the buyers which is a bit irksome as it is holding back most people who view my work there from buying it.

    Overall: Itch.Io is awesome.
It is a great, simple place to play, and release indie games and gamedev experiments.
Recommended. BTW, my username on itch is 'matthornb'. I have about a dozen minigames and asset packs posted on itch and the fact that I use it that much, speaks volumes about how much I like this gaming site.
