digiKam is an advanced open-source digital photo management application that runs on Linux, Windows, and macOS. The application provides a comprehensive set of tools for importing, managing, editing, and sharing photos and raw files. You can use digiKam’s import capabilities to easily transfer photos, raw files, and videos directly from your camera and external storage devices (SD cards, USB disks, etc.). The application allows you to configure import settings and rules that process and organize imported items on-the-fly. digiKam organizes photos, raw files, and videos into albums. But the application also features powerful tagging tools that allow you to assign tags, ratings, and labels to photos and raw files. You can then use filtering functionality to quickly find items that match specific criteria. digiKam features powerful searching capabilities that let you search the photo library by a wide range of criteria.

The Photos experience empowers you to do more with your photos and videos. Easily view, edit, compare, create albums and make movies of your special memories. The filmstrip shows all the items from that location and allows you to jump to other photos while staying immersed in the experience. You can also compare photos and videos in the same app window using the multi-view mode. This is activated by selecting multiple items from the filmstrip interface.​​ In the toolbar you’ll get to work with edit, mark-up, favoriting, metadata and have quick access to third-party photo editors. Tonfotos simplifies browsing of large photo collections by grouping shots by events, dates, people, locations, and so on. Quickly find what you need regardless of where files are stored - on your computer, external drives, or NAS. Tonfotos artificial intelligence will automatically find the faces of people in your photos and help you mark those images that include your relatives and friends. The program learns from already marked photos and automatically offers you new photos with the same people. Modern neural networks allow Tonfotos to recognize people regardless of their age in the picture, and can work even if the face is only partially visible. Shotwell supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, WebP and RAW photo files. Shotwell's RAW format support is currently limited. When you view a RAW photo, you are actually viewing a JPEG derived from the RAW photo, not the RAW image itself. Additionally, the RAW editing pipeline is not fully 16-bit - you can only export edited photos as 8-bit files. Most supported formats can be used for export (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP). The Basic Information pane appears at the bottom of the sidebar, and displays a brief summary of the photos you've selected. If no photos are selected, it displays a summary of the entire collection. You can toggle the display of this pane using the information command. The map pane appears at the bottom of the sidebar as part of the basic Information pane, and displays an overview map the photos you've selected. If no photos are selected, it displays an overview of the entire collection.

    "Better than Apple Photos, but nowhere as slick."

    Pros: Far deeper control than I've found anywhere else. Is reliable; even if it crashes, your photos are safe.

    Cons: No support and it does have rough edges. i.e. Much slower at everything. Crashes occasionally (but data is never lost).

    Overall: I use both digiKam and Apple Photos. Both have great dedupe and import/export features. Both use sidecars well and play nicely together. I prefer Photos for daily work, but always use digiKam for storage and many bulk operations. Apple supports many paid/proprietary services while digiKam supports even more free services.

    If I could use only one, digiKam wins for it's non-propriety nature and ease of storage. It supports far more use cases. But I'd miss Apple Photos.

    Apple Photos:
    I LOVE Apple Photos; it's lightning fast, easy to use, beautiful and - more importantly - it preserves your originals intact. But Photos gets bigger than my drive, fast. Backing it up is tough once it grows, iCloud is not good enough. There is no way to share and it only works on Mac.

    digiKam:
    digiKam lets your database to reside on your Mac, Linux or -say you don't use Microsoft!! - Windows machine, but you MAY choose to keep the photos elsewhere - like a nas. This is much more sane for a large, or professional collection. And of course, it has many more features.

    "digiKam - The unsung gem."

    Pros: Really good Photo Management that is easy yo use. The face recognition system is particularly useful.

    Cons: Image editor is stand alone outside the main managment system.

    Overall: Good replacement for Lightroom for windows which has many features that allows anyone with a large collect of photos to keep track of them.
