"TrueNAS, A pot of Gold at the end of the rainbow??"

    Posted 2023-06-01

Pros: TrueNAS is truly a great platform that has humble beginnings and is poised to be a leader in the storage marketplace.

    Cons: There is nothing to dislike. Your data is your data, when and where you want it; setup there is little to no chance you will experience any data loss. I wish there was a mini version that was based on only nvme storage like consumer grade Sabrent pocket SSDs. Would like to see a unit that can accommodate like all M.2 2280 and have the footprint that represents these 1" x 3" SSDs;

Overall: So many false flags and hopes are introduced into the marketplace hoping they will be the next "big idea" product or service; TrueNAS seems to have accomplished this goal. Their product lineup is mature and robust.

    "TrueNAS - DIY experiences"

    Edited 2023-06-01

Pros: Better usability on my opinion than on commercial NAS (QNAP)
DIY possible on own hardware and it was quite easy to setup.

Cons: Access control a bit confusing and also NFS / Samba related configurations.

Modifying existing Storages is very tricky (extending size etc).

Overall: Generally well performing and easy NAS system to setup and use.
Also underlying ZFS is working quite well.

"Versatile NAS with plenty of expansion option"

    Posted 2023-06-01

Pros: Expandable to other technologies like Kubernetes / Docker. Without overwhelming the user of in depth cluster configs.

Cons: Especially on older hardware I found issues with the recent major release. Mostly regarding GPU passthrough.

Overall: Trusty always on NAS that hosts all solutions that are needed in a home scenario. Enterprise was unfortunately not in my scope since my use case differs a little there.

Pros: TrueNAS offers robust data storage solutions with advanced features, scalability, and excellent data protection. Impressive performance & reliability.

    Posted 2023-06-01

Pros: Great solution for self hosted storage.
Set up is easy, even using proxmox.

Setting up data sets is not a 100% clear to me.

Overall: I'm using TrueNAS for 1 year now and it's nice to have a clean and nice way to store my own data. I really like it.
