A free and decentralized alternative to video platforms

About PeerTube

Free software to take back control of your videos. PeerTube, developed by Framasoft, is the free and decentralized alternative to video platforms, providing you over 400,000 videos published by 60,000 users and viewed over 15 million times PeerTube aspires to be a decentralized and free/libre alternative to video broadcasting services. Our aim is not to replace them, but rather to simultaneously offer something else, with different values. PeerTube is not meant to become a huge platform that would centralize videos from all around the world. Rather, it is a network of inter-connected small videos hosters. Anyone with a modicum of technical skills can host a PeerTube server, aka an instance. Each instance hosts its users and their videos. In this way, every instance is created, moderated and maintained independently by various administrators.

"PeerTube is exactly what we need now for P2P video/podcasts, etc."

    Posted 2022-06-21

Pros: PeerTube v4 and higher is awesome. Great p2p tech. It even comes with an easy to use docker container. Any server admin with basic skills can install and configure PeerTube. Remote storage and (soon) remote transcoding will be supported as well. You can't get much more decentralised than that.

Just fyi, there's also a free plugin for PeerTube server now called "Hive-Tube". Any video or podcast etc that you upload, or import from Youtube (and other sites) can be auto-monetized, providing you (and even your viewers/listeners if desired) with passive income.

Cons: Cons? I honestly can't think of any. Remote transcoding will be nice too, but that isn't really needed anyway unless you run a huge site like youtube or something.

Overall: Use PeerTube server with the free Hive-Tube plugin installed, and your passive income will flow.

    5-stars! :)

    "Open source video platform"

    Posted 2022-04-13

    Pros: Free & Open Source.
    Easy to use.
    Decentralized & federated.
P2P streaming to reduce network load by sharing bandwidth between users.
    Community driven development.

Cons: Hosting instance needs lots of script installation - not easy for most users.

Overall: PeerTube is a decentralized p2p approach to video platform where multiple instances host videos. It is a novel idea but currently lacks mass adoption.
