"Mirror, mirror, which is the fastest editor of the realm?"

    Posted 2021-09-14

Pros: — The pitch and the rendering of the text, and its readability is an aspect that is systematically ignored by professional reviewers. PSPad has the best readability (using: Consolas).
    — The bookmarks are numbered, with good management, and their use is seamless. Thanks to the numbering system you can jump directly there with CTRL + number, that is, if you remember which is which! But then again, a real programmer is (or should be) like a music composer or a writer: they do know their lines of code, don't they.
    — Comparing files is practical and fast, no hassle.
    — Window wrap can be set on a per file basis, or globally when opening files.
    — Hex editor. This may not be useful for some, but has the merit of being there.
    — The toolset is comprehensive: good color tools + eye dropper, clipboard monitor, expression evaluator, a long list of convertors, and more.
    — Above all, PSPad is fast, intuitive, and responsive. What counts in the end is that the tool serves you, not the other way around...

Cons: — Not suitable for coders who prefer or need to work in close, or real time collaboration.
    — When a bug appears in a new build, it takes some time before it gets fixed.

Overall: All in all, even though PSPad is never listed among the top 10 (or 12, or whatever) by reviewers, it is in fact the best editor, in particular because most other editors, however sexy, all have one or more essential features/options missing, or awkwardly or partially implemented. But most of all, not matter how finely you try to tweak, in most cases the text is washed out. When you consider how critical it is for a coder the easiness of shifting eye focus from one line or block to another, to better maintain his coding focus, then it's difficult to understand how most text editors are amazingly loose in choosing or implementing the text engine.
