Since 1998, HurLoss has been the foundation for structural design in hurricane-prone states and has been utilized for federal emergency management and mitigation planning nationwide since 2003. The model offers a unified event set covering the entire North Atlantic basin, including the U.S., Caribbean, Bermuda, and parts of Canada, Mexico, and Central America. HurLoss is distinguished by its physics-based hurricane hazard modeling and engineering load and resistance modeling, starting with fundamental principles and validated through claims data. It incorporates future climate conditioning, allowing users to assess risks based on current and projected climatological data, including factors like sea surface temperature and wind shear.
