About Calmly Writer

Traditional word processors include dozens of options for formatting text, distracting you from what really matters, writing. Calmly Writer is an editor designed to focus on what you want to tell, with a simple, unobtrusive, and easy-to-use user interface. Calmly Writer has been designed to help you focus on writing. As you start typing, all the distracting options disappear from the user interface. The "focus mode" option highlights only the paragraph you are editing at the time. Format your text simply by selecting and clicking on the desired style. If you prefer, you can also do it with keyboard shortcuts or markdown. As long as you do not close a document tab, that document will be opened every time you start the application. If the document was not saved, its backup will be loaded. Calmly Writer displays the number of words and characters written, and allows you to set a target. You can choose between light, dark, dark blue, dune and old-school mode.

"Calmly is the best distraction-free word editor for me"

    Posted 2023-03-19

Pros: Calmly is like a markdown editor (sort of?) for writers. I still don't get what all the hype is about with markdown. I get that pure text files will still be readable post-apocalypse as long as one computer exists (or whatever that crowd goes on and on about) but beyond that? It's quick and "easy" to format if you learn a lot of new shortcuts/syntax, taking of valuable brain space better spent on things related to actually writing. Back to Calmly:
It's pretty! Well, mine is. You can set yours however you want, but mine is a deep navy background with an orchid purple font. Don't ask me how this isn't distracting, it just isn't. Granted, this is the paid-for (very cheap!) desktop version, not the free web version, so it has more customization options.
It is somehow actually soothing. I'm a stress-writer. And eater. And, well, I'm sure you get the point. I write when I'm stressed and writing ([well] or trying to, anyway) stresses me out. But I don't see or feel any of the noise when I'm using Calmly.
There's no risk to using the free web version, forever or just to try, unless that is, you don't want to replace your current writer/editor. In which case, what are you doing here?!

Cons: The person who reviewed before me didn't know what they were talking about, so I guess that's a con that's not at all the fault of Calmly. I bought this software in November 2022 and did not get charged at all beyond the first time. Make sure you're signing up for the right stuff, read the fine print, don't go to crappy websites, use an adblocker and don't click shady links, and run MalwareBytes, because you (dear other reviewer) clearly have something else going on.

Overall: I have no problems with either the free web version of the [cheap] premium version for Windows, Mac, or ?Chromebook? according to their site. I'm going to try running the web version on my small Samsung tablet to use as a word processor with a little typewriter-esque keyboard because that sounds like a good time to me. But hey, I'm a weirdo who collects mechanical keyboards, books, and now typewriters. And software I think will help me that I never end up using. Calmly Writer isn't one of those. I genuinely use it all the time. I'd use it even more if I could be more focused and less scattered.
Speaking of, I'm trying to learn how to use Obsidian to help with the scattered issue. It can't make me more focused or motivated, nor can it make me a better writer, but I hope it can help me better organize my research and, with it, my thoughts.
I'm a Calmly convert. My advice? BUY IT. But you need to at least TRY it! It's free. So, duh.
And my message to the one other reviewer: Check your CC statements and practice web safety. Don't blame Calmly when the fault is either yours via negligence or mistake. Please, please, please people. Stop blaming broke indie devs who do this as a passion side project - FOR US - when you don't understand something. ASK FOR HELP!

    "Calmly Writer hidden costs"

    Edited 2023-03-01

    Pros: N/A.

Cons: All one can find is information about a one time fee.
Thereafter they draw $30 from your account monthly.

Overall: Since theres no info about this anywhere, I'll call it a simple scam.
