About Blynk

Blynk is a low-code IoT software platform for connecting devices to the cloud, building mobile apps to remotely control and monitor them, and managing thousands of users and deployed products. It’s a PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) that helps businesses and individuals seamlessly progress from a prototype of a connected product to its commercial launch and further growth.

Blynk provides a range of features facilitating the launch and maintenance of commercial projects, e.g. device provisioning, device management, data storage and visualization, alerts and notifications, user management with multi-level tree-like organization structures, OTA firmware updates.

Blynk is hardware-agnostic which means customers can connect to the Internet any device from the broad list of supported hardware and use a suite of software products to monitor and control it.

"Blynk moving into new phase with different services"

    Edited 2021-07-10

Pros: One of the disadvantages of Blynk was the lack of a Dashboard. Your only graphical user interface was the smartphone. The NEW Blynk has a dashboard. Other than that, the ability to generate GUI on smartphones and the wide variety of microcontrollers, including Arduino, that could be employed made it a standard in its field. The first time, out-of-the-box, experience was remarkable. Engineers and small companies could quickly see the benefits of this technology approach and confidently move on to the commercial side.

Cons: Blynk has been criticized in the past for its use of its own terminology (such as virtual pins), technical writing, and approach to distributive control at the "hobbyist" level. The hobbyist or DIY level was free, however, you were required to buy the widgets (energy) on a one-time basis per project. The NEW approach is anchored around the dashboard and employs classes and objects that are used in OOP to provide the basis of a control strategy to support company-wide logistics. Once again, Blynk has renamed these functions with their own terminology. and as a result, the documentation has become very convoluting if one is familiar with OOP. More elements, such as OTA firmware updates and device registering are also introduced for a more professional GUI install to support the company-wide logistical approach, however, the approach is on a commercial level requiring a much greater understanding of the technology and logistical network topology. Expect an extreme learning curve overhead at the intro level and only a few widgets to experience Blynk. Future updates to the support documentation as the new approach settles and matures should remedy this.

Overall: Having had a good experience in the past with Bynk's original entry/hobbyist level, the news of a dashboard approach was welcome. However, the out-of-the-box experience and the disconnect between the documentation and actual experience with the NEW Blynk, along with the severely reduces options and widgets left at the "Free" level, has become a disqualifying factor for recruiting future engineers and small companies who would later upgrade to a professional level.
