Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • It's a very good and easy to use git client. Best of all for those working mainly on open source projects, they are generous enough to give a copy for free.
  • SmartGit provides access to all Git features, making it extremely easy to perform even the complex operations through the GUI. The application is free for Open Source projects. Side-by-side comparison. Uses system SSH client configuration.
  • It is great that SmartGit can be used for private use and open source projects for free. It works very reliably. The speed is ok.

Cons

  • Nothing to not like. I use it for open source development, so it's free.
  • The licensing options may not suit everyone. The free users must always have the latest product version installed.
  • The usability is often very tedious, users who don't work with Git every day won't understand the dialog explanations. For example, this kind of "explanation" makes it even worse and one must read it many times to understand it: "In Contrast to Fetch Only, Pull will also incorporate fetched changes." Additionally, there is no "get help" link on those annoying dialogs.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Fast, simple and intuitive to use. Since we were all Sublime Text users the Shift-Ctrl-P menu was very easy to use.
  • - This a very fine, functional and clean design for a GUI client. - Avoids over complexity and focuses on the important stuff. - Its pricing is based on a free version with all the features but the ability to change skin to dark mode, so nothing stops you to try the product, all the features for all the time you need.
  • Compared to other programs that just destroy computers. This one opens quickly and work efficiently. The hotkeys could be a little bit more intuitive but can be worked around.

Cons

  • Gitkraken has much prettier colour schemes. The light and dark colour schemes of Sublime Merge are very subdued.
  • - Is not integrated with other mainstream IDE tools but Sublime Text. Is not a big pain for all the users that don't like in IDE git clients and prefer to have a clean separate tool for git stuff (which I recommend). - Is not integrated with cloud git providers so you can't expect to interact with your pull requests (or merge requests) directly through the GUI.
  • No real major cons. This program works well and is better than Electron or GitKraken. Custom themes would be cool, but not necessary, price has slowly been increasing.
