About

Synopsys OptSim is an award-winning photonic integrated circuit (PIC) and fiber-optic system simulator that enables engineers to design and optimize photonic circuits and systems. It offers state-of-the-art time- and frequency-domain split-step algorithms, providing a native photonic-domain environment for accurate simulations. OptSim can function as a standalone solution with its own graphical user interface or integrate into the OptoCompiler Photonic IC design platform. When integrated with OptoCompiler, OptSim supports electro-optic co-simulation with Synopsys PrimeSim HSPICE and PrimeSim SPICE electrical circuit simulators, and seamlessly integrates with the PrimeWave Design Environment for advanced simulation, analyses, and visualization, including parametric scans, Monte Carlo, and corner analyses. The software includes extensive libraries of photonic and electronic components and analysis tools, and supports numerous foundry process design kits (PDKs).

About

netTerrain OSP is an advanced fiber management software designed to give businesses complete visibility into their fiber optic infrastructure. With powerful GIS mapping, inventory management, and analytics capabilities, it allows organizations to efficiently track and manage fiber assets from street to strand. The software simplifies tasks such as circuit management, capacity planning, and fiber strand analysis, providing up-to-date inventory information and eliminating guesswork. With its intuitive interface, users can easily create and allocate circuits, measure distances, and manage assets such as manholes, conduits, and towers. netTerrain OSP integrates seamlessly with third-party tools and supports bulk data imports, making it an essential tool for fiber optic management and outside plant operations.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • netTerrain is easily configurable and highly adaptable to virtually any network environment, including Outside Plant (OSP), Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM), and logical network diagrams. Its flexible design lets organizations accurately model complex multi-layered infrastructures without being constrained by rigid templates. The platform includes a rich set of tools that enable teams to build and maintain a complete, standardized catalog of copper and fiber cables, devices, ports, and connectivity attributes across any network infrastructure. This supports precise documentation, capacity tracking, and future planning. Configuration options are clearly organized and straightforward to use. A major advantage is the extensive documentation and training resources—covering all key areas of the product in both written and video formats—that support users of every skill level and accelerate adoption and ongoing proficiency. From a cybersecurity perspective, netTerrain has been thoroughly vetted and provides multiple authentication methods along with granular, role-based access controls. These features allow administrators to define precisely how different users interact with the system, enforcing least-privilege principles and supporting organizational security and compliance needs. Customer support has been superb, with immediate responsiveness and a consistent willingness to help develop tailored solutions for each site’s unique issues and requirements.

Cons

  • netTerrain is a capable network documentation and visualization tool, though it has a few usability aspects that some users may find less intuitive. Moving around the diagram requires holding the Shift key or pressing and holding the mouse-wheel button. These methods work, but they may not feel as natural or fluid as the panning gestures found in some other diagramming applications, particularly during extended editing sessions. The catalog offers solid functionality for managing devices and symbols, yet there is room for improvement in the precision of placement and the ease of refining individual items. Greater flexibility in positioning, alignment, and fine-tuning could make detailed diagram work a bit more efficient. Overall, these points are minor and do not significantly hinder the software’s core capabilities. Most users adapt quickly, and the platform remains effective for network documentation tasks.
