About

The MDaemon Email Server was one of the first Microsoft Exchange alternatives offered to businesses around the world. It has been developed with the ongoing input from IT professionals seeking an easy-to-use, reliable, and secure mail server that does not require expensive administration or impose high per-user costs. It simplifies messaging and collaboration with a focus on security and privacy, an intuitive, user-friendly web mail design and by offering administrators Mobile Device Management, Business Instant Messaging, Document Sharing, and other enterprise-class features that can be managed with minimal support. MDaemon Email Server supports IMAP, SMTP, and POP3 protocols, and features include: integrated webmail with IM and document sharing, Outlook support, compromised password alerts, color-coded log files for quick and easy troubleshooting, customizable email policy setting to fit your unique network environment, Mobile Device Management, Account Hijack Detection, and more.

About

What is Postfix? It is Wietse Venema's mail server that started life at IBM research as an alternative to the widely-used Sendmail program. Now at Google, Wietse continues to support Postfix. Postfix runs (or has run) on AIX, BSD, HP-UX, IRIX, LINUX, MacOS X, Solaris, Tru64 UNIX, and other UNIX systems. It requires ANSI C, a POSIX.1 library, and BSD sockets. Postfix attempts to be fast, easy to administer, and secure. The outside has a definite Sendmail-ish flavor, but the inside is completely different. Multiple SMTP deliveries over the same TLS-encrypted connection. This reuses the existing tlsproxy(8) and scache(8) services. MySQL stored procedure support. Gradual degradation: in many cases a Postfix daemon will log a warning and continue providing the services that are still available, instead of immediately terminating with a fatal error. Postfix can set the execute bit on a queue file. If this does not work, then no mail will ever be delivered.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • No doubt it is simple to handle plus a tons of SPAM/Security controlling options. Over it is a good quality email server, providing great features and customer support as we are using for the past 20 yrs.
  • The system is easy and intuitive, it gives system administrator completely visibility and control.
  • We started using Mdaemon email in 2007. True to their words, Mdaemon installation was problem-free and flawless. The help desk reached out to us during installation for support. But, we did not need any support as installation was simple and straight forward. It was easy to install, configure and use even for a non technical person.
  • We started to use MDeamon software on our own server back with version 9 many years ago. Over the years they have made so many improvements to not only the email features, adding docs and file sharing to an entire domain or just one single user. Among other great improvements to the web UI such as layout and ease of use, and also greatly improving the security gateway for spam. Now we have migrated to the hosted platform, same great software, and support without the costly upgrading of new servers, OS versions, and hardware costs.
  • The password check, complex password option, and robust a/v engines are just a few of the features we love about MDaemon. They line up well with our ongoing security initiatives.

Cons

  • Cant integrate with SSO and no appliance based. There is nothin much to dislike about this software. AltN has implemented features over time that are important to our requirements."
  • The system not 100% exchange compatible, may affect some demanding clients user experience.
  • Sometimes the system is memory hungry. This can cause the system to slow.
  • In the past, older versions were some what of a pain to migrate to a newer version of the software. But they have made great efforts to make this transition easier for the network admins over the years. The only other feature i would say is lacking is a way for a user to create or download a backup of their entire email account, settings, and files.
  • We were disappointed when the built in encryption for webmail was discontinued.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • 1. Easy to deploy. 2. Easy to customize at an intense level. 3. Easy to integrate with DKIM and DMARC. 4. Various workaround available. 5. Lightweight to operate.

Cons

  • Sometimes troubleshooting deliveries can be troublesome. Integration with Social media like LinkedIn and Facebook inside Postfix is not possible yet.
