About

Inkling is an open-weights multimodal AI model from Thinking Machines designed as a customizable foundation model for developers, researchers, and enterprises. The model is a Mixture-of-Experts transformer with 975 billion total parameters, 41 billion active parameters, and support for context windows up to 1 million tokens. Inkling was trained from scratch on text, images, audio, and video, giving it native capabilities across reasoning, coding, agentic tool use, vision, audio, factuality, and instruction following. It is built with controllable thinking effort so users can balance performance, latency, and token efficiency for different workloads. The model is available for fine-tuning on Tinker, with playground access, API availability through ecosystem partners, and full weights published on Hugging Face. Built for customization, Inkling gives teams an open-weights base model for building domain-specific AI systems, multimodal agents, coding workflows, research tools, and more.

About

OpenAI o1 represents a new series of AI models designed by OpenAI, focusing on enhanced reasoning capabilities. These models, including o1-preview and o1-mini, are trained using a novel reinforcement learning approach to spend more time "thinking" through problems before providing answers. This approach allows o1 to excel in complex problem-solving tasks in areas like coding, mathematics, and science, outperforming previous models like GPT-4o in certain benchmarks. The o1 series aims to tackle challenges that require deeper thought processes, marking a significant step towards AI systems that can reason more like humans, although it's still in the preview stage with ongoing improvements and evaluations.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • I’ve been using OpenAI’s o1 model for a few weeks now, and it’s really remarkable. What I love most is how deliberate it feels—it doesn’t just throw out answers; it actually “thinks” through complex problems. Whether it’s coding, science, or tough math problems, the level of reasoning is impressive. The way it handles structured outputs like JSON is a huge plus for developers, making data organization so much easier. I also appreciate how accessible it is, whether through ChatGPT Plus or the API—it’s super versatile for a range of applications.

Cons

  • There are some trade-offs with o1’s depth. It can be slower than previous models because of its more thoughtful reasoning, which takes some getting used to. If you’re new to AI or machine learning, the advanced features might feel a bit overwhelming at first. And you might need to tweak your workflows to account for the slightly longer processing times.
