About

FreeCommander is an easy-to-use alternative to the standard Windows file manager. The program helps you with your daily work in Windows. Here you can find all the necessary functions to manage your data stock. You can take FreeCommander anywhere, just copy the installation directory on a CD or USB stick, and you can even work with this program on a foreign computer. Copy, move, delete, and rename files and folders (alternatively as Windows or FreeCommander operation) Paths longer than 255 characters can be opened, copied, moved, and renamed. File filters (regexp possible too) for display and file operations. Easy access to system folders, control panel, desktop, and start menu. File viewer and thumbnail view inside archives too. Built-in file viewer to view files in hex, binary, text, or image format. Optional tree view for each panel. Flexible configuration of almost all features. Access to mobile devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets) User-defined columns for detailed views.

About

Right-click a file and it goes where that kind of file belongs. QuickMove is a rules-based file mover for Windows. The first time it meets a new kind of file the Rule Wizard builds the rule with you, by name, extension or pattern (regular expressions included); after that the move happens without a prompt. Files that fit no rule get a list of your favourite folders. Every move is in a history with undo, multi-step included. Rules can be overridden or edited from the context menu, can route files into sub-folders by name, and can rename an existing file in the target folder out of the way instead of overwriting it. The optional Automation plugin (US$24.99) watches folders such as Downloads and applies your rules by itself. Works from the Windows 11 first-page context menu. One-off US$29.99 licence with free minor updates; free edition and a 7-day trial. Windows 7 SP1 to 11 and Windows Server 2012 R2 and above. Email support within 24 hours.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • It has a lot of functions—too many, by now.
  • This has the best interface and routine functionality of all the dual-pane browsers. After years as a sysadmin, there is still nothing I can't do with FreeCommander.

Cons

  • In the latest version, the available settings have become so bloated that it is impossible to master them. Reactions to a mouse click—or even just a mouse movement—are no longer predictable. If I can configure what happens when I click on empty space, the icon, the filename, the file extension, or anything else, and get a different result each time—well, that might be fine for gamers. But I didn't realize this was a video game.
  • If I had a choice, I'd go for an open-source cross-platform tool.
