About

Create a folder from a file, and put it back, from the right-click menu. Select one file or many in Windows Explorer, right-click and choose FileToFolder: each file gets a folder named after it and is moved inside. FolderToFile does the reverse: it pulls files out of their folders into the current one, from sub-folders too if you want, and deletes the empty folders it leaves behind. Dissolve moves a folder's contents up one level and removes the folder. It works from the Windows 11 first-page context menu with no "Show more options" step, and as a normal application with command-line options for scripts. One-off US$19.99 licence with free minor updates; free edition and a fully functional 7-day trial. Windows 7 SP1 to 11 and Windows Server 2012 R2 and above. Email support, answered within 24 hours. Made in Australia; current release 7.3, September 2026. Need rules-based moving as well? That is QuickMove, from the same people.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • It has a lot of functions—too many, by now.
  • This has the best interface and routine functionality of all the dual-pane browsers. After years as a sysadmin, there is still nothing I can't do with FreeCommander.

Cons

  • In the latest version, the available settings have become so bloated that it is impossible to master them. Reactions to a mouse click—or even just a mouse movement—are no longer predictable. If I can configure what happens when I click on empty space, the icon, the filename, the file extension, or anything else, and get a different result each time—well, that might be fine for gamers. But I didn't realize this was a video game.
  • If I had a choice, I'd go for an open-source cross-platform tool.
