About

This is the project site for Evergreen, highly-scalable software for libraries that helps library patrons find library materials, and helps libraries manage, catalog, and circulate those materials, no matter how large or complex the libraries. The Evergreen Project develops an open-source ILS (integrated library system) used by more than 2,000 libraries around the world. The software, also called Evergreen, is used by libraries to provide their public catalog interface as well as to manage back-of-house operations such as circulation (checkouts and check-ins), acquisition of library materials, and (particularly in the case of Evergreen) sharing resources among groups of libraries. Evergreen depends on the following technologies Perl, C, JavaScript, XML, XPath, XSLT, XMPP, OpenSRF, Apache, mod_perl, and PostgreSQL. The latest stable release of a supported Linux distribution is recommended for an Evergreen installation.

About

Lets you feed in a list of ISBNs, UPCs or barcode scans. Readerware then does the rest, automatically searching the web and cataloging your books, music and videos. Readerware can merge information from multiple web sites to build the most complete database possible, with cover art. Automatically and effortlessly. Want to catalog a few items or build your database while you browse the web? Readerware drag and drop support will do just that. Find a new CD by a favorite artist? Drag from your browser and drop on Readerware. It is cataloged! It really is that easy. Unique and innovative library management, inventory and database solutions for collectors, schools, churches, libraries, and other organizations all over the world. Readerware can search the internet and automatically catalog the books, music and videos you own. Just scan the barcode or enter the ISBN/UPC. There is no simpler way of cataloging your library. It eliminates the chore of manual data entry.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Having a web-based ILS means that it can be accessed by our staff anywhere on any system. This makes deployment incredibly easy, MARC work easy, and any work out in the stacks a breeze. It is a robust and powerful ILS that has open source functionality for deep customization.

Cons

  • The ability to pull reports is an incredibly chaotic system that seems unnecessarily busy. Back end is incredibly robust, but finding the features you need can be difficult.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • I loved this software. Was my most used application. It seems the company has disappeared. I've read rumors the author died.
  • Nothing. I had an earlier version I had purchased in 2008 that did work, but now this company appears to no longer exist.
  • I have been using Readerware for 12+ years, currently running Release 4.1. It does what I need to track my library items, at least until this past Sunday.
  • Over all it is a good product. I started with the version 3 bundle and later tried version 4. But I am unable to get any response from customer support.

Cons

  • It's gone. There no longer seems to be any entity that is supporting the software.
  • This software cannot be used. BrightSpring Market LLC (doing business as "FastSpring", aka "FSPRG")- the company name that accepts your payment for this upgrade, will happily take your money and send you a message stating that you will get a registration code in as little as an hour ... But you will not. And you will not get your money back. Readerware appears to be out of business, as their website can no longer be found. Attempting to contact Brightspring or Readerware will get you no where.
  • On Sunday Feb 1 I could not use the auto-catalog feature; the software reported it could not get to wherever it goes to look up the book data when I enter the ISBN. When I tried to go to the Readerware website, I got a "we can't find that" message. Anyplace I've spotted that purports to offer RW downloads has a Release number lower than what I'm currently running.
  • I am unable to get the registration codes after paying for the upgrade for the version 4 bundle. I sent two emails but got no response from the company. I am very frustrated and disappointed with Readerware's lack of support. I am unable to use the software without the registration codes.
