Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Open edX comes with a built-in authoring tool called Studio which offers by default a wide range of different component types. This allows course creators and educators to build diversified, engaging and interactive courses. It is easy to use both from the learner's (LMS) and the educator's (Studio) point of view. In case the default available component types do not cover the respective requirements, the platform can be easily extended (among others via LTI). Open edX is a great and modern platform to transfer and query knowledge.
  • The Open edX software is open source, which ensures a modern architecture with short release cycles and continuous technological advancements. This creates the potential for more flexibility and faster innovation. Open edX is characterized by its high level of flexibility and scalability, so the platform can be adapted according to requirements and the number of concurrent users. The platform consists in the front end out of two parts: the LMS and the Course Management System (“Studio”).
  • The open edX platform is a complete open source solution for building and running online courses. It is the platform that powers the edx.org website where millions of learners worldwide find thousands of great courses. The functionalities in the platform are broad and well designed and there is a lot of flexibility for authors to build high quality learning experiences.
  • Massive catalog of courses. Lots of recognized institute-curated content. Experienced teachers. Great community and forums. Free tracks of most courses. Certificates can be gained by one time payment for individual courses.
  • Wide range of topics Good quality of course content and instructors Most courses are offered for free Certifications from recognized universities Professional programs in tie-up with unis Courses are archived once complete - allows for access even after completion Financial assistance program

Cons

  • A product that lives through the active exchange and work of a worldwide community of experienced frontend and backend developers should also provide features by standard that enable the work as a learning community. This aspect is still expandable.
  • A modular, but very large and complex ecosystem. The learning curve for developers can be difficult.
  • Setting up, configuring and operating the platform is challenging, but there is a live community of users willing to help and also well stablished companies that provide professional services to organizations interested in using this technology.
  • No cons it is hands down the best platform for technical courses.
  • The only con i found is that it can be challenging for a new user to navigate and understand everything edX has to offer - there are multiple types of courses and tracks and it takes some time to get used to.
