About

Docker takes away repetitive, mundane configuration tasks and is used throughout the development lifecycle for fast, easy and portable application development, desktop and cloud. Docker’s comprehensive end-to-end platform includes UIs, CLIs, APIs and security that are engineered to work together across the entire application delivery lifecycle. Get a head start on your coding by leveraging Docker images to efficiently develop your own unique applications on Windows and Mac. Create your multi-container application using Docker Compose. Integrate with your favorite tools throughout your development pipeline, Docker works with all development tools you use including VS Code, CircleCI and GitHub. Package applications as portable container images to run in any environment consistently from on-premises Kubernetes to AWS ECS, Azure ACI, Google GKE and more. Leverage Docker Trusted Content, including Docker Official Images and images from Docker Verified Publishers.

About

Portainer is an intuitive container management platform for Docker, Kubernetes, and Edge-based environments. With a smart UI, Portainer enables you to build, deploy, manage, and secure your containerized environments with ease. It makes container adoption easier for the whole team and reduces time-to-value on Kubernetes and Docker/Swarm. With a simple GUI and a comprehensive API, the product makes it easy for engineers to deploy and manage container-based apps, triage issues, automate CI/CD workflows and set up CaaS (container-as-a-service) environments regardless of hosting environment or K8s distro. Portainer Business is designed to be used in a team environment with multiple users and clusters. The product includes a range of security features, including RBAC, OAuth integration, and logging - making it suitable for use in complex production environments. Portainer also allows you to set up GitOps automation for deployment of your apps to Docker and K8s based on Git repos.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • -Allows instances of apps to run in their own memory space -Quick to install -Large repository of apps available -Tools to manage apps available -Available for Win10, Linux, NAS
  • Cross platform Repo to publish images which are not out there Part of open source project High performance for finding and sharing containers images
  • Easy to setup and get started with. Portability. Available across all platforms - Windows, Linux and MacOS. Large number of pre-built images. Simplifies deployment pipeline.

Cons

  • -While its easy to install a lot of Docker apps, installing tools to manage them is more challenging. -Linux based vs. Windows based Docker can be confusing.
  • Documentation is not that descriptive and In linux its find difficult to start and on windows virtualisation needs to be on and some changes in BIOS. And will not work on Windows home.
  • CLI takes time to learn. Resource intensive. Documentation is not beginner friendly.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Portainer ensures secure delivery of containers and reliability while tracking the managed containers. I like the fact it offers free 5 nodes for the Business Edition to allow, the developers to test Portainer before making a move. The speed at which it operates while uploading images and management of projects. It is easy to master because of its intuitive design (UI). It is also easy to understand docker, containers, and Kubernetes if you are new to the cloud.
  • With the Portainer Business version you have the ability to manage your container cluster like never before, it allows you to use very advanced features such as RBAC to control the roles of Kubernetes nodes, it also allows you to use Helm Charts that makes the deployment of container images very fast, also the option of higher levels of authentication such as oAuth, authentication connecting your Active Directory server for greater robust security.

Cons

  • So far I haven't experienced any setback so far for performance.
  • Using Portainer for more than two years I have not found any difficulties of use, on the contrary it has facilitated my day to day in my DevOps area.
