About

Code Browser is a folding text editor for Linux and Windows, designed to hierarchically structure any kind of text file and especially source code. It makes navigation through source code faster and easier. Code Browser is especially designed to keep a good overview of the code of large projects, but is also useful for a simple CSS file. Ideal if you are fed up of having to scroll through thousands of lines of code. It supports syntax highlighting for all major languages and custom syntax highlighting can also be added. Although Code Browser was initially designed to edit programs, it can also be used for different tasks such as plain text outlining or helping to understand existing source code. I've added a page with suggestions to take advantage of folding.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • This is how life with Code Browser is: Start writing code Initialization Globals Main loop to do requested tasks Opening screen Do task A Do task B ...etc. Each of the above is a link to an entire tree of code going as deep as you need. When it's been three years since you've looked at this source and you need to add a feature to task B, look how easy it is to find your way to the place you need! Code Browser is the only editor that lets you create your own hierarchy just the way you want it, just the way you think, no troubles. No other editor lets you do this. Every other editor wants to decide for you what gets folded and what doesn't (usually by looking at the code itself...but code isn't how ANYONE outlines and solves programming problems).

Cons

  • No one you know is using this wonderful program or has even heard of it. Everything about the program depends on one guy who wrote this editor in a language that no one (except him) uses. So, you get what you get.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • I have used Visual Studio Code mainly for automation scripting and day to day code updates and I like that it is lightweight, easy to navigate, and supports useful extensions. It makes it convenient to manage scripts, terminal commands and quick debugging in one place
  • Lightweight and very fast Excellent extensions for HTML, CSS, JSON, schema, Markdown Makes debugging tracking scripts much easier Powerful search across folders and files Free and works smoothly even on low systems
  • Linux, macOS, and Windows are among the operating systems that Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is compatible with. Its cross-platform compatibility makes it a flexible option for developers working in various contexts.
  • 1. It has an excellent set of tools for debugging and testing the code. 2. It can be customized heavily from the settings or from the configuration files. 3. Furthermore, it has a lot of extensions available on the extension store to increase the features and functionality of the code editor. 4. It supports all the major programming languages and frameworks. 5. It is extremely light on the system.
  • Best free IDE that i have used so far. It is very light weight in terms of memory utilisation and works smooth on my Mac Book PRO. I really like the window splitting feature and renaming my terminal tabs. I can run my different environments in different named tabs.

Cons

  • One issue I have seen is that it can slow down a bit when too many extensions are installed or when the project becomes large
  • Slight learning curve if you’ve never seen code editors Too many extensions can become confusing Not beginner-friendly on day one without YouTube help
  • VS Code could be thought to be less efficient for really big projects when compared to more complex IDEs. Nevertheless, the size and complexity of any project will determine this.
  • It does not have dedicated build tools available on the options and to use that the user has to use command in the terminal.
  • Although the features are great, one feature that i really miss out on this IDE is the use of GIT. E.g. if it does not support a GUI to resolve merge conflicts. It is handy for updating the repo but not that flexible for resolving conflicts.
