About

Code Browser is a folding text editor for Linux and Windows, designed to hierarchically structure any kind of text file and especially source code. It makes navigation through source code faster and easier. Code Browser is especially designed to keep a good overview of the code of large projects, but is also useful for a simple CSS file. Ideal if you are fed up of having to scroll through thousands of lines of code. It supports syntax highlighting for all major languages and custom syntax highlighting can also be added. Although Code Browser was initially designed to edit programs, it can also be used for different tasks such as plain text outlining or helping to understand existing source code. I've added a page with suggestions to take advantage of folding.

About

Kate is packed with features that will make it easier for you to view and edit all your text files. Kate lets you to edit and view many files at the same time, both in tabs and split views, and comes with a wide variety of plugins, including an embedded terminal that lets you launch console commands directly from Kate, powerful search and replace plugins, and a preview plugin that can show you what your MD, HTML and even SVG will look like. Kate supports highlighting for over 300 languages making it easier to read code in almost all programming languages. Kate also understands how brackets works and will help you navigate inside complex code blocks hierarchies. On-the-fly spellchecking is also included and will help you check your text before publishing. Work on multiple files at the same time with split views. Use the project sidebar to navigate your project directory structures and use Kate's smart tabs to quickly access your recently opened documents.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • This is how life with Code Browser is: Start writing code Initialization Globals Main loop to do requested tasks Opening screen Do task A Do task B ...etc. Each of the above is a link to an entire tree of code going as deep as you need. When it's been three years since you've looked at this source and you need to add a feature to task B, look how easy it is to find your way to the place you need! Code Browser is the only editor that lets you create your own hierarchy just the way you want it, just the way you think, no troubles. No other editor lets you do this. Every other editor wants to decide for you what gets folded and what doesn't (usually by looking at the code itself...but code isn't how ANYONE outlines and solves programming problems).

Cons

  • No one you know is using this wonderful program or has even heard of it. Everything about the program depends on one guy who wrote this editor in a language that no one (except him) uses. So, you get what you get.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • It's free and open-source, extremely fast start-up times, uses very little memory, and surprisingly customizable (I barely did any myself though; I wanted to keep it light). I find it useful for swiftly taking notes at a moment's notice, but I have also used it to quickly peek through config files, source code, or even certain text documents--they all just work. As a user who swaps between Windows and Linux, it being cross-platform is such a huge plus for me, and is the leading reason why I use it over Notepad++. As much as I like tinkering with software and hardware alike, I also don't want to find out that certain features I use regularly on one OS's notepad don't exist on other OS's notepads, even some third-party ones. It's just some peace of mind.

Cons

  • It lags for ~1 sec when it wraps text for the first time since the app was opened. Even after using this app for over a year, I still find the logo hard to identify as a text editor of any kind. I still have to tell people who borrow my laptop that my notepad app is this, even when it's pinned to the taskbar and start menu.
