About

Code Browser is a folding text editor for Linux and Windows, designed to hierarchically structure any kind of text file and especially source code. It makes navigation through source code faster and easier. Code Browser is especially designed to keep a good overview of the code of large projects, but is also useful for a simple CSS file. Ideal if you are fed up of having to scroll through thousands of lines of code. It supports syntax highlighting for all major languages and custom syntax highlighting can also be added. Although Code Browser was initially designed to edit programs, it can also be used for different tasks such as plain text outlining or helping to understand existing source code. I've added a page with suggestions to take advantage of folding.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • This is how life with Code Browser is: Start writing code Initialization Globals Main loop to do requested tasks Opening screen Do task A Do task B ...etc. Each of the above is a link to an entire tree of code going as deep as you need. When it's been three years since you've looked at this source and you need to add a feature to task B, look how easy it is to find your way to the place you need! Code Browser is the only editor that lets you create your own hierarchy just the way you want it, just the way you think, no troubles. No other editor lets you do this. Every other editor wants to decide for you what gets folded and what doesn't (usually by looking at the code itself...but code isn't how ANYONE outlines and solves programming problems).

Cons

  • No one you know is using this wonderful program or has even heard of it. Everything about the program depends on one guy who wrote this editor in a language that no one (except him) uses. So, you get what you get.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • I have been using this IDE for over 5 years now and love using it every single day. I find the diff GUI tool very handy when it comes to comparing 2 pieces of code. Whether it be git branches or compare with clipboard, that is awesome. Also, the runner config profile is i think what beats everything. They keyboard shortcuts are very handy when it comes to opening new projects.
  • - It has some unique features like version control and code completion. - The debugging of code can be done quite easily and intuitively on IntelliJ IDEA. - The user interface of the application is smooth and user-friendly. - It does not take up a lot of storage in the system after installing. - It has auto save features which save the code in case of accidental closing of the application. - It has support for multiple frameworks.
  • - The user interface of the application organized very well, and it also gives a tutorial on how to get started. - Making is project is quite easy and step-by-step process. - It has a quite good debugging tool that helps immensely while building the code. - It has all the necessary features like syntax highlighting, error detection and extensions support.
  • - The user interface is simple and straightforward, and all the features can be navigated without any hassle. - The debugging is quite descriptive and fast. - It supports all the major programming languages and extensions. - It has all many developer tools that makes the development process a lot easier.
  • - IntelliJ IDEA is a clean, intuitive, and, feature rich IDE for development. - It supports all the major programming languages. - The extension store has numerous extension and plug-ins to increase the functionalities. - The appearance can be heavily customized according to the user's taste.

Cons

  • Sometimes, my Macbook really struggles in terms of processing as IntelliJ could be very memory consuming application. Also, sometimes my eslint configuration is not picked up automatically and for that reason i have to switch to VS Code.
  • - The set-up of the application requires precision, otherwise it throws a lot of errors. - The community version does not have as good support as the paid version.
  • - It is heavy to use, even on the system with decent processor and RAM.
  • - The community version does not have enough features and the commercial version just too expensive for students and interns.
  • - IntelliJ IDEA is a bit heavy on the system's memory. - It is an IDE for web development, but in application development there are performance issue while building the app.
