Bitbucket is more than just Git code management. Bitbucket gives teams one place to plan projects, collaborate on code, test, and deploy. Free for small teams under 5 and priced to scale with Standard ($3/user/mo) or Premium ($6/user/mo) plans. Keep your projects organized by creating Bitbucket branches right from Jira issues or Trello cards. Build, test and deploy with integrated CI/CD. Benefit from configuration as code and fast feedback loops. Approve code review more efficiently with pull requests. Create a merge checklist with designated approvers and hold discussions right in the source code with inline comments. Bitbucket Pipelines with Deployments lets you build, test and deploy with integrated CI/CD. Benefit from configuration as code and fast feedback loops. Know your code is secure in the Cloud with IP whitelisting and required 2-step verification. Restrict access to certain users, and control their actions with branch permissions and merge checks for quality code.

About

GitLab is a complete DevOps platform. With GitLab, you get a complete CI/CD toolchain out-of-the-box. One interface. One conversation. One permission model. GitLab is a complete DevOps platform, delivered as a single application, fundamentally changing the way Development, Security, and Ops teams collaborate. GitLab helps teams accelerate software delivery from weeks to minutes, reduce development costs, and reduce the risk of application vulnerabilities while increasing developer productivity. Source code management enables coordination, sharing and collaboration across the entire software development team. Track and merge branches, audit changes and enable concurrent work, to accelerate software delivery. Review code, discuss changes, share knowledge, and identify defects in code among distributed teams via asynchronous review and commenting. Automate, track and report code reviews.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • 1. It is one of the best version controlling tool in terms of ease of use. 2. The user interface of the application is user-friendly. 3. Raising PRs is easy and quick. 4. It gets easily integrated with other Atlassian tools like JIRA. 5. Branches can be easily created with just few clicks.
  • 1. The code can be reviewed easily on Bitbucket, with lots of useful features. 2. It has a great user interface which makes the platform easy to use. 3. It sends dedicated email after every commit and merge for tracking. 4. Not only that, but it can be easily integrated with other Atlassian applications like Jira.
  • - all the tools I need for a source code storage for my data analysis projects - ideal for small teams: free tier was enough to work with a couple of collaborators, private repos are included - CI/CD tools are useful to automate some work, i.e. publish html pages on an external website after committing changes - Bitbucket has a very convenient GIT GUI program for managing repositories
  • - It enables a smooth workflow environment for the developer working in the team by providing features code review before pushing it. - Managing the code and different branches is an easy task with Bit Bucket. - It can be easily connected to other application like VS Code and Jira for feature enhancement and increase productivity increment.
  • - Bit bucket is extremely easy to configure and integrate with other apps. - It is easy to use and cost-effective. - The repositories are safe and secure.

Cons

  • 1. It only allows repositories up to 2 GB, which be low sometimes for big projects.
  • 1. It does not have a built-in CI/CD pipeline feature. 2. The pricing is on a bit higher side.
  • - Bitbucket is not the most popular GIT-repository, so I can imagine that it may not be a best fit for someone who wants to grow a software start-up.
  • - The interface should be more customizable. - The community is not large.
  • - The SSH key management on Bit bucket is confusing.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • For my needs the free version was more than sufficient to make available public files lost when designer passed away. Was working to consolidate the files and information into one PDF via LibreOffice in organized well indexed cross referenced document to allow those wanting to build this highly sensitive seismometer to do so rather than fish about the files of odd names or hidden in zip files. I am a retired software engineer that role included managing source control systems and project within including ensuring builds worked. Hence I have worked with many vendor solutions as well as create in house source control systems over many years. I have had privilege to use some excellent SCM years ago that is not even close to "modern" SCM currently and in past years.
  • The UI and baseline features are a great asset to this, I generally prefer the GitLab UI, especially the online UI as compared to Github. GitLab also offered when I last configured it more free options than Github, especially in regard to branch management. That said the biggest advantage this used to have as compared to Github was that Gitlab allowed private development for free while Github did not, that said Github changed this in prior years so both are solid choices.
  • - GitLab provides a user-friendly user interface to version control the and collaborate with teams on projects. - Admin can assign various roles to the developer, providing him limited control over the code base. - Code comparison user interface is intuitive and helps a lot in reviewing the code before merging. - It is free to use for personal use.
  • With GitLab, it is pretty easy to create repositories and manage the permissions. Different roles like developers and owner can be assigned to a repository. Various tasks like creating branches, pushing code, cloning and merging can be done easily. The code can be reviewed before merging and the review interface is detailed and display all the important key points. It is available for free for individuals. The user interface is modern and intuitive.
  • 1. GitLab has the best user interface among every other version control tools. 2. Creating a repository and managing it is a pretty easy task with GitLab. 3. The learning curve is relatively lower than other alternatives. 4. It has good integration with third-party software programs like Jira and VS Code.

Cons

  • Impossible to accomplish most basic of basic tasks like create folder, upload files. Impossible to delete account. Impossible to use help as often goes to page not found. Annoying have to open ticket to request account delete. Very annoying as some point cloudflare intercepts saying need to confirm human
  • My main issue with GitLab when trying to use it on freeware projects was that it is more technically challenging to setup than Github. The need to manually get SSH keys can be challenging for those less skilled with technical capabilities. For example, setting up other similar tools such as Github on a project that has various contributors both those with coding abilities as well as less technical roles such as writers or graphic developers, there is the potential for misunderstanding and difficulties in setup.
  • - Merge conflicts can be a bit tricky to resolve sometimes because of the instruction.
  • The system becomes noticeably slower when scaling the projects, hence, in my experience, I didn't find it the best version control platform for scalable projects.
  • 1. There isn't anything to dislike about the tool, it is easy to use, intuitive and has a really good support.
