Pros from Real Users

Pros

  • Athena's products all work on an iPad system which makes the whole system fairly simple to set up and learn.
  • We dropped the HSRP device and they shipped us one over night and we were back up and running the next day. Talk about amazing support!
  • This software was very easy to use, install, and set up. I loved the ease of installation on this app.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Organization / sorting ability. this box is asking for more than 100 characters to complete this answer. Unfortunately, there are no real PROs for this software. Needs an update badly... did this come out in the 1990s?!?!?! Because i was a teen then, and this set up would make sense for that time frame......
  • It looks like it's not awful. There might be a use case for a small practice that only manages one location with low patient load? But it's priced like enterprise software.

Cons

  • No easy way to do the following: add/remove dx codes, add/remove CPT codes, saving information, the way you review to update and save claims, will kick you out constantly, the viewing screens are awkward and not easy to find things. Changes / updates take multiple steps.
  • Inability to scale: Every location has to be built by Athena custom with a 120 day lead time. There is no way to make changes that apply everywhere without coding in an ancient language made in 1966 and last updated in 1995 (MUMPS). Users must be individually created in two separate locations and then manually within each environment. Athena can 'wipe, clean and recreate' an environment that duplicates an environment, but this process is rife with errors and is not reliable. It also requires specifically contacting Athena to have done. Modern systems don't have this problem. Out of date backend: Your organization will need to have developers who are familiar with a wildly out of date coding language in order to take advantage of their customization options using a 1970's style pre-DOS command prompt. Reporting is also out of date and requires accessing a second IDX exclusive program: Do you like Power BI? Too bad, you're using the Windows 95 era reporting suite housed in a separate website with separate user lists and permissions from the IDX program itself. Additionally, getting any modern reporting to work at scale is a herculean effort due to non-conformity in setup on Athena's end. Their SQL backend is a nightmare. Staff are either incapable or incompetent and take no responsibility: Many of the staff cannot make meaningful changes. It's clear that the program has been built by people who left long ago and the remaining people have no real idea of how to make changes to modernize the program. The staff wasn't familiar with Single Sign On authentication, the security standard that's been around for nearly 25 years. Staff said that Single Sign On was ready for rollout but didn't have it set up until weeks after software was rolled out. We deal with hundreds of vendors and this company is by far the worst from a capability, a modernization and competence standpoint. Support pricing: They're open 8-5 EST -- anything outside of that time is off hours support which starts at $1200 for the first hour and $250 for all hours after that. There are so many other things that this program gets wrong between being out of date and being set up by people with no standards who take no responsibility. We manage 50+ applications and this one is by far the worst we've ever seen.

Athena Security delivers AI-powered entryway security across its platform of weapons detection systems, using AI to enhance WDS decision-making, and operational efficiency. AI is embedded in concealed weapons detection systems (WDS) to accurately identify firearms and knives while distinguishing everyday items, reducing false alarms and maintaining high throughput. In AI-assisted X-ray, machine learning using Apple iPad's GPU for highlighting threats in bags on the WDS, improving accuracy and speeding response. The Ambulance Bay WDS applies AI to screen stretcher patients, securing previously unprotected entry points, while secondary screening uses AI-driven workflows to reduce human error. Beyond detection, AI monitors behavior and compliance—alerting on bypass attempts or missed procedures. Telepresence and AR alert glasses provide real-time support, while all systems connect into one platform for centralized monitoring and intelligent security operations.

Athena Security delivers a complete entryway gun detection suite built to stop threats before they enter a facility. Unlike camera-based approaches, Athena focuses on point-of-entry screening using AI-assisted X-ray, concealed weapons detection, ambulance bay screening, and secondary screening. The Apollo 500 detects concealed firearms on a person in real time, while AI-powered X-ray identifies guns and other threats inside bags with automated highlighting and operator control. The Ambulance Bay Weapons Detection System extends protection to stretcher patients—closing a critical gap in hospital security. Secondary screening solutions ensure consistent inspection of feet, bags, and flagged items, reducing human error. Together, these layers create a comprehensive, high-throughput security approach that detects firearms across all entry points—on body, in bags, and through ambulance access—delivering full entryway protection unlike anything else on the market.

Athena Security provides an AI-powered physical security platform focused on securing entryways for hospitals, K–12 schools, casinos, places of worship, and high-traffic facilities. The solution combines walk-through weapons detection (Apollo 500), electronic device detection (Apollo 650), AI-assisted baggage X-ray with iPad control, and hospital visitor management system. Unique capabilities include an Ambulance Bay Weapons Detection System for screening stretcher patients and secondary screening solutions for feet and bags to reduce human error during secondary screening process. Built with DHS-aligned processes, Athena ensures consistent testing, controls, and compliance using physical security systems. Telepresence and AR alert glasses support security staff in real time. All products integrate into one platform for centralized monitoring, operational efficiency, and enterprise reporting across multiple locations

Athena Security’s Visitor Management System (VMS) streamlines and secures entryway access for hospitals, K–12 schools, and high-traffic facilities. The platform automates visitor check-in with identity verification, badge printing, and real-time screening against watchlists and custom alert lists, helping organizations maintain control while improving front-desk flow. Designed for healthcare and education environments, it supports mobile and kiosk workflows such as visitor restrictions, custody checks, and policy enforcement while maintaining privacy and efficiency. Native integration with Epic (via HL7/Epic on FHIR) aligns with hospital workflows, reducing friction while strengthening security. A key differentiator is how VMS data integrates directly into the WDS process. Critical data points—such as visitor history, prior incidents, person-of-interest status —are presented to officers in real time alongside detection alerts. This added context enables faster, more informed split-s
