About

Ampwall is an marketplace and gathering place for music communities. People creating and releasing music and art sell and share their work. Fans and supporters of independent music create profiles to be part of the scenes that they love. Compared to other platforms, every sale sends more money to bands, making it the best way to directly support artists short of buying merch with cash at a show. Ampwall is a Public Benefit Company founded and built by lifelong musicians and members of DIY music scenes. Our mission is to help build thriving music communities.

About

As the world’s largest music and audio platform, SoundCloud lets people discover and enjoy the greatest selection of music from the most diverse creator community on earth. Since launching in 2008, the platform has become renowned for its unique content and features, including the ability to share music and connect directly with artists, as well as unearth breakthrough tracks, raw demos, podcasts and more. This is made possible by an open platform that directly connects creators and their fans across the globe. Music and audio creators use SoundCloud to both share and monetise their content with a global audience, as well as receive detailed stats and feedback from the SoundCloud community.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Nice that they stated support for independent artists. I liked the layout of the site and ease of finding new artists.
  • Great place for great music run by cool people. Music e-commerce is a field low in innovation, but Ampwall takes pleasure in continuing to refine their product based on user (both consumer and creator) feedback, which is something that services like Bandcamp do not do.
  • * easier to deal with multiple music projects (everyone is a "label", in a sense) * incredibly responsive devs * user-driven features * artist discord is already building a nice vibrant community of indie musicians * web UI works equally well on mobile or desktop (and is consistent between the two)
  • Ampwall is doing an impeccable job positioning itself not only as an alternative to Bandcamp, but also a community and tool that far exceeds Bandcamp in a number of ways. From a UI experience, it's a streamlined, intuitive experience both from the consumer / fan perspective and the seller / artist perspective. The community it's fostered is a tremendous feature that sets it far apart from all other music distribution platforms on the market.

Cons

  • Dogmatic and Captured. They "cancelled" music artist Louise Distras because she supports women's rights elsewhere. This is a red flag for all artists.
  • Currently Ampwall isn't as well-known as other platforms. That just means it doesn't have all the music... yet!
  • * still behind Bandcamp on some features, but catching up fast * less well known than BC
  • There are still some features missing, like display of followers / supporters and a mobile app. But the development team is so passionate, responsive and transparent about the goals and eventual plans, that it seems that every qualm I could possibly have with Ampwall is being actively addressed and already planned for before I could even express a concern or criticism.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • - SoundCloud has a lot of underrated artists and various types of music on their platform. - The user interface of the application is clean and easy to use. - It is available on all the platforms. - The output quality of the songs is high and crystal clear to hear. - There are a lot of curated playlists available according to moods.
  • - SoundCloud is easy and intuitive to use. - It is a good platform to get started as an artist. - There are millions of songs and beats present on the platform. - The platform is ad-free.
  • I’ve been using it to start hosting some of my audio files for music and podcasts. It’s a great place to get started because their free version allows you to still upload a decent amount without any issue.
  • Soundcloud is the place to go to find the latest original works (tracks and podcasts), remixes, and samples. Its automated copyright detection system ensures that the audio files you can find are novel, and many up and coming artists got their start on Soundcloud. There is also what feels like a rudimentary social network system that you can use to find similar artists based on how they interact via comments and votes.
  • The free version has a cap with how many minutes you can upload, but the amount they allow is pretty generous and enough to test it out. Combined with some social media presence elsewhere, and this is a great place to upload your music or other audio. It's easy to upload, and you can choose whether or not someone can download your tracks.

Cons

  • - It ticks all the checkmarks and does not lack in any category. No cons in my opinion.
  • - The output sound quality on SoundCloud is average.
  • I mean, the limits for the basic version are not ideal. You only get 4 GB per month which is about 3 hours. This means a ton for music creators, but for podcast creators that can be limiting, depending on the length and frequency of your podcast episodes.
  • The interface on desktop wasn't the most intuitive for me. I endured feeling like I was at risk of going deaf for a few months before finally figuring out how to change the volume on individual tracks...
  • It's not as popular as YouTube, and I find Bandcamp is much better for finding specific, niche things. Soundcloud, like all the popular sites is also oversaturated with people so you really need to work to make yourself stand out from everyone else. Likewise, on the audience end, it's a mess to find something worth listening to.
