About

Amahi is software that runs on a dedicated PC as a central computer for your home. It handles your entertainment, storage, and computing needs. You can store, organize and deliver your recorded TV shows, videos and music to media devices in your network. Share them locally or safely around the world. And it's expandable with a multitude of one-click install apps. Amahi Sync™ is a new and exclusive Amahi app that very easily allows you to sync, share and back up files online automatically. It's your personal cloud. Without any extra software to install. Amahi Sync runs on your HDA and monitors files in shares that you enable for syncing. When new files are added, deleted or files change, they are automatically synced with Amahi's cloud storage. You can then browse the files there or share them.

About

TrueNAS is the world's most deployed storage software. TrueNAS is a universal data platform that allows users to easily adopt a modern, open source approach to storing and protecting their growing data. TrueNAS is open source and harnesses the power of the legendary ZFS file system to provide unified storage (File, Block Object, and Apps) with the reliability and performance demanded by virtualization, backup, and many other data-heavy workloads. The TrueNAS CORE edition (formerly FreeNAS) is based on FreeBSD for unified scale-up storage. The TrueNAS SCALE edition is based on Debian Linux for either scale-up or scale-out solutions, and offers Linux Containers, VMs (KVM), and scale-out ZFS storage capabilities. Both are known to work well on standard hardware. Join the millions already using TrueNAS, including the majority of Fortune 500 companies, and experience why TrueNAS is very highly rated for yourself.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Amahi was incredibly reliable back in the day. It turned an ordinary PC into a full-featured home server with file sharing, media streaming, and backup tools all in one place. The dashboard made management simple, and once it was running, it rarely needed attention. It was stable, efficient, and perfect for home networks.

Cons

  • Initial setup required some networking knowledge. Not fully plug-and-play, and newer systems have since simplified what Amahi once pioneered.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • I've been using TrueNAS Core server for about 4 months now. It serves a home storage role for me and my girlfriend. Hopefully in the near future, I will persuade our two families to also accept it, so that our valuable data can have the needed care. This will also allow me to upgrade it, and use much more of what TrueNAS has to offer. To point out few of the best pros, here they are: Features Stability Hardware compatibility Open source nature
  • Reliability. Flexibility. Price. UX/UI. Easy to manage. Snapshots. Recovery functionality. Encryption. and etc.
  • The initial configuration was a walk in the park. ZFS is awesome in so many ways! The Ui in both Core and Scale is clean and organized. Setting up VM and containers is foolproof.
  • Web interface. Easy to use and secure. Mostly the fact that is somewhat agnostic to hardware. Requirements are not crazy bad and it just works.
  • The stability and data integrity. Plugins and more recently the Linux branch (Scale). Docker support. Growth and constant innovation.

Cons

  • Without too much experience in this regard, since it is my first server, I will nevertheless be honest, and admit that after a month, there was no reply to my ticket on the TrueNAS forum. There really are a lot of resources, but they are scattered across the web, many of them being related to an old, FreeNAS product. Interface and guides, for better ease-of-use, are the main things that I would like to be improved. Of course, being a community supported version of TrueNAS, that has its real limits. But I believe that community will grow in the near future.
  • USB external drive support. Some UX/UI issues.
  • It's too soon for me to list cons since i'm so new, the features i'm using work flawlessly.
  • Interface can be slow at times and a bit crowded and I wish they had a way to support some hardware other than inter nics.
  • Network stack can be a little wonky when you have multiple NICs.
