Description

SMF service wrapper for ZFS pool import/export under Sun/Oracle Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris builds (including OpenIndiana and illumos).

The first proper step in the project would be to clean up and bring over my documentation and script samples located at http://wiki.openindiana.org/display/oi/Advanced+-+ZFS+Pools+as+SMF+services+and+iSCSI+loopback+mounts

zpoolsvc Web Site

Features

  • Control individual ZFS pools as Solaris SMF service instances, allowing to separate the bootup process into administratively accessible state and the startup of application SMF services which depend on separate storage pools (which in turn can be inaccessible sometimes, and currently would break standard startup before i.e. the SSH service starts).
  • Enable delayed import of certain pools, which can help during repairs or troubleshooting - giving a kernel developer or an admin time to set up tracing tools before a pool with actual or injected problems gets imported and starts causing trouble.
  • Overall - increase manageability of your systems and visibility of problems for troubleshooting.
