The "transmit application network traffic" (xant) tool is a network traffic generator, which sends *real*
application traffic over the network to simulate a busy enterprise network.
Most other traffic generators send random data to saturate links or simulate heavy network usage. This is fine to test link load or firewall rulesets, but is not capable of dealing with an application proxy or Cisco NBAR.
Certainly there are professional network simulation tools available (like NS-2), which are time-consuming to set up when working with a small-scale prototype lab network.
