IMPORTANT NOTICE

This is an UNOFFICIAL release of Devuan Excalibur with Openbox window manager. This distribution is not officially endorsed by the Devuan project.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Devuan developers for their outstanding work in creating a systemd-free Debian fork. Devuan provides users with freedom of choice in init systems while maintaining Debian compatibility.

================================================================================ Openbox Quick Guide ================================================================================

ACCESSING THE DYNAMIC MENU

Right-click anywhere on the desktop to open the dynamic menu. The menu provides access to applications, system settings, and session controls.

GENERATING THE MENU

If the menu appears empty or you need to refresh it, run:

obmenu-generator -i -p

This command generates a dynamic menu with icons enabled.

  • The "-i" flag enables icons in the menu
  • The "-p" flag creates a pipe menu (dynamic, always up-to-date)

To run without icons (faster):

obmenu-generator -p

RESTARTING OPENBOX

After changing Openbox configuration files, restart Openbox to apply changes:

openbox --reconfigure

Or select "Reload Openbox" from the right-click menu (under Utilities > Openbox)

================================================================================ Network Configuration ================================================================================

WIFI SETUP (Wireless Networks)

To connect to a WiFi network using the graphical interface:

  1. Open wpa_gui (available in the menu or run "wpa_gui" in terminal)
  2. In the "Adapter" field, select: wlan0
  3. Click "Scan" to search for available networks
  4. Click on your desired network from the list
  5. Enter the password in the "PSK" field
  6. Click "Connect"

Your connection will be saved for future sessions.

ETHERNET (Wired Connection)

Ethernet connections are configured automatically via DHCP when a cable is connected. No additional configuration is required.

IMAGEMAGICK (Image Viewing)

To view images using ImageMagick:

  1. Right-click on any image file (JPG, PNG, etc.)
  2. Select "Open With" or "Open With ImageMagick"
  3. The image will open in the display viewer

MONITOR SETTINGS

To adjust your monitor resolution and display settings:

  1. Right-click on the desktop to open the menu
  2. Navigate to: Utilities > Monitor Settings
  3. Adjust resolution, orientation, and positioning as needed

DESKTOP SETTINGS

To change the desktop background and adjust desktop icon settings:

  1. Right-click on the desktop to open the menu
  2. Navigate to: Utilities > Desktop Settings
  3. Select your preferred wallpaper and configure icon behavior

FILE MANAGER SETTINGS

To customize the file manager (PCManFM):

  1. Open the file manager
  2. Click "Edit" in the menu bar
  3. Select "Preferences"
  4. Adjust settings such as:
  5. Default view mode
  6. Show hidden files
  7. Single or double-click to open files

LXTERMINAL SETTINGS

To customize the terminal appearance:

  1. Open LXTerminal
  2. Click "Edit" in the menu bar
  3. Select "Preferences"
  4. Adjust settings such as:
  5. Font size and family
  6. Background and text colors
  7. Scrollback buffer size (how far back you can scroll)

TINT2 PANEL SETTINGS

To customize the panel (tint2):

  1. Right-click on the desktop to open the menu
  2. Navigate to: Utilities > Tint2 Settings
  3. Adjust settings such as:
  4. Autohide behavior
  5. Compact mode
  6. Panel position (top, bottom, left, right)
  7. Add or remove application launchers
  8. Clock format and appearance

OPENBOX THEMES

To change the Openbox window theme:

  1. Right-click on the desktop to open the menu
  2. Navigate to: Utilities > Openbox Menu Configuration > Themes
  3. Select your preferred theme from the list

  • The panel at the bottom (tint2) shows running applications and system tray
  • The menu is automatically updated when new applications are installed
