This app has very good idea of starter images. Children begin from them easily. My daughter too.

While I have yet to extensively look through it, test it, and use it. It certainly looks like it will fit the bill and be quite useful for the kids. Some of my more likable & usable software has come from sourceforge and I expect the same here.
